British woman's fiance saved her life and was then washed away to his death in flash flood
A young British woman, the sole survivor of a cave disaster in Thailand in which eight tourists died, told last night how she saw her fiance washed away to his death after saving her life.
Helena Carroll, 21, from Solihull, Birmingham, was in a massive cave complex in a national park in south Thailand when tragedy struck and the rest of the group was swept away by a flash flood.
Eight people were killed in the flash flood as it swept through the cave. They were two Thai tourist guides, a Swiss couple with two young daughters, a 10-year-old German boy, and Helena's 24-year-old boyfriend John Cullan, who drowned, when their cave flooded in Khao Sok national park, 400 miles south of Bangkok.
Miss Carroll said: "I cannot believe I am the only survivor. I can't believe my John is dead. One minute I was in what I thought was the most beautiful place in the world.
"The next thing there is death all around me," said Helena who waited 16 hours to be rescued.
