Family was forced to sleep four-in-a-bed

A heartbroken mother whose eight-week-old daughter died as she slept four-in-a-bed urged parents to not sleep with their babies after she suffered "every mum's worst nightmare".

Donna Abrahams wept as she told an inquest how she had slept at her own mother's house with her children on the evening of July 4 last year.

The night ended with four people - Donna, her mother Linda and two of her daughters Courtney and tiny Kelsey sleeping squashed together in the same bed.

But tragically, the 25-year-old lay over her youngest child during the night and she woke to find her daughter cold and stiff next to her.

The baby's accidental death prompted coroner Roger Whittaker to warn parents not to allow their infants to sleep in a bed with them.

What a terrible thing to happen. I frequently had my babies in bed with me when I was breast feeding them. Sometimes I would be feeding them and fall back to sleep and wake up to find they had finished feeding and fallen asleep themselves. I can't imagine how it must feel to accidentaly do this to your child. I can only imagine just how tired you must be sometimes especially in the early stages when they are feeding though the night. Poor lady.

Yes I imagine lots of parents sleep with their babies now and again, especially if, as you say, you have been breastfeeding in the night and are tired, then accidentally fall asleep. It's a terrible thing to happen.
