Horse Meat Found In New Irish Processing Plant

A second meat processing plant in Ireland has tested positive for traces of horse meat.

The Department of Agriculture confirmed damaging findings of 75% equine DNA in raw ingredient at Rangeland Foods in Co Monaghan.

Just days after the ABP Food Group lost an estimated €45 million (£38m) in contracts over the deepening scandal, Irish police have been called in to aid inquiries.

A special investigation unit from the department has been tasked to get to the bottom of the controversy.

In a statement the department said production has been suspended at Rangeland, a frozen burger supplier established in 1892 with a turnover of €18m euro (£15m) and about 80 staff.

"The company has indicated that none of this product has entered the food chain," the department said.

Inquiries into whether Polish labelled product has been used in other meat processing plants in Ireland are ongoing.

Horsemeat scandal: France blames processor Spanghero

French meat processing company Spanghero knowingly sold horsemeat labelled as beef, the French government has said.

Spanghero's licence is being suspended while an inquiry continues, Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll said.

The firm has denied the allegations, saying it only ever dealt in meat it believed to be beef.

A widening scandal over mislabelled horsemeat has affected at least 12 European countries.

Horsemeat found in Ikea meatballs

Furniture giant Ikea has withdrawn a batch of its traditional meatballs from sale in its UK stores after horsemeat was discovered by Czech authorities.

The Swedish company said meatballs would still be available to buy in its stores and only one batch was being withdrawn as a precaution until further tests on it could be done.

A spokesman said internal tests had shown no problems up to now.

He said in a statement: "Ikea takes the test result from the Czech Republic authorities showing indications of traces of horse meat seriously.

"The concerned production batch of meatballs has been withdrawn from the Swedish Food Market in the Ikea stores.

"Already two weeks ago, Ikea Group initiated DNA analyses of all meat products in the range. Twelve tested samples of different batches of meatballs showed no traces of horse meat.

"To validate the test results, we are now initiating further tests on the same production batch in which the Czech Republic authorities found indications of horsemeat."
