If anyone needed proof of how far Cheryl Cole has come, it was crystal clear for 11 million X Factor viewers on Saturday night.

Beaming from the plum seat next to Simon Cowell – where Dannii Minogue would love to be perched – Cheryl’s first live X Factor show was a triumph.

Not only did she have the strongest acts, but her willingness to criticise Cowell conjured up memories of steely Sharon Osbourne. And if she stumbled over a couple of lines, it didn’t spoil her night.
