It's a sign of moral emptiness that we let ourselves be gulled by cheap tears on TV, yet cast those with self-control as uncaring villains

We have become a nation of crybabies. Contestants on the The X Factor weep copiously, whether they win or lose. Eoghan Quigg, a 16-year-old contestant on the show, burst into floods of tears when his friend Diana Vickers failed to convince the viewing public that she was a pop star in the making.
