The king of US talent shows is back. Six months ago it was widely predicted, not least by Simon Cowell, that The X Factor would swan in and overtake its more staid predecessor, but no: having made the twin errors of firing Cheryl Cole as judge and hiring Steve Jones as host, The X Factor barely mustered half of Idol’s ratings.
No surprise, then, that Idol makes no big changes for its 11th season. Tearful mother hen Jennifer Lopez and naughty rock uncle Steven Tyler still judge, alongside Randy Jackson, with walking toothpaste commercial Ryan Seacrest comforting the oddball contestants as auditions begin in New York and New Jersey.
