Ten million tune into X Factor show

The new series of the X Factor pulled in more viewers than all the other terrestrial TV channels put together, figures revealed today.

The fourth series of the ITV1 talent show, which began last Saturday, is proving a particular hit with younger viewers.

A total 10 million people tuned into the show at its peak last night - the best audience ever for the second episode.

The ratings were up by more than 1.5 million on last year's figures.

The hour-long show trounced BBC1 rival Dance X, which averaged just 3.6 million viewers, compared to X Factor's average of 8.5 million.

Simon Cowell Denies X Factor Rift

Simon Cowell has hit out at rumours his X Factor co-judges Sharon Osbourne and Dannii Minogue are hiding a bitter rift.

Newspaper reports have claimed the pair secretly dislike each other and row constantly backstage.

But Cowell insists they are close, and says, "I can't lie. I have seen nothing which makes me think they don't get on.

"I've been with them throughout the auditions and I just don't see it. Unless I'm the most naive person in the world, there are no rows.

"Someone's just going about quietly whispering these things, which are a pack of lies."

It's a big fix blasts reject
X-Factor judge makes a brave girl fan's dream come true... and the show's sexiest ever line-up

X Factor loser Rachel Golsby last night claimed the show was FIXED.

Housewife Rachel, 32, said Simon Cowell railroaded Dannii Minogue into rejecting her band About Time yesterday.

She moaned: "Louis said he liked us. Then it was down to Dannii and she went: 'Erm well' then Cowell just shouted:, 'The answer's no'. It is so fixed." Sundaypeople

SIMON STEPS IT UP A SNEER
KEVIN O'SULLIVAN
AFTER wearing the hell out of "absolutely brilliant" and "probably the worst version of that song I've ever heard", Simon Cowell moved on last night and coined an amazing new catchphrase: "Other door".

ITV's X Factor roadshow was in Glasgow and, following their auditions, every crap contestant traipsed off to the wrong exit. Until the ever helpful Mr Cowell set them straight. He should have got a directing credit.

A much better programme this week.

Not so cruel, no laughing at mental cases and a special treat as Old Ma Osbourne went missing due to "work commitments in Los Angeles".

With wallpaper judges Louis Smug and Kylie's sister reduced to mumbling "it's a no for me", charismatic Cowell delivered a fine one-man good cop-bad cop performance. Ruthlessly rejecting sobbing 14-year-old Shirley Bassey fan Vivienne, he told her: "You win some - you lose some." Witnessing her hysterical weeping, he sighed: "This is when I think we made the wrong decision to lower the age range."

Talking of sob stories - I didn't rate shop assistant Leon Jackson's much. All he had to offer was his mum raised him on her own. Leon mate, next time tell them you almost died from bird flu - and if they don't put you through you're off to fight the Taliban with a peashooter. Works every time.

More tears as Cowell rounded on feeble family group It's About Time (they shut up!). "Everything was wrong. The image, the lack of charisma..."

"So you didn't like us?" they asked, needlessly.

Meanwhile, I hated Spice Girl wannabes Fallen Angels until, celebrating their audition success, one of them kneed Dermot O'Dreary in the balls. Now they've got my vote.

Simon Cowell has branded allegations that X Factor judges Dannii Minogue and Sharon Osbourne are at loggerheads "a pack of lies".

The show boss insisted: "I can't lie.

I have seen nothing which makes me think they don't get on. We're one big, happy family.

"I've been with them throughout the auditions and I just don't see it.

"There were a few days at the start when things were awkward but that was simply because they didn't know each other.

"Unless I'm the most naive person in the world, there are no rows.

"Someone is just going about quietly whispering these things, which are a pack of lies." Cowell revealed that there have been tears from the girls during the auditions but it was not because they had fallen out but down to the stress of making the show.

He added: "On a couple of occasions things got over-emotional. But there certainly haven't been any tearful walkouts. Dannii is very much part of the team now - she's been accepted.

"It feels like we've got a good relationship. And anyway it's not about the judges, it's about the contestants." But insiders at Cowell's company Syco insist all is not well between the two female judges.

One source claimed Sharon took a dislike to Dannii after she made comments about fancying Victoria Beckham's husband David.

Sharon told some of the team that her friend Posh had been upset by the remarks.

The insider insisted the situation could come to a head when the live eviction shows start in the autumn.

They said: "Sharon will come out with her claws scratching and howling to get her way.

"Dannii is a tough cookie but has never faced a foe like Sharon."

X Factor host Dermot O'Leary should quit Big Brother's Little Brother, said Cowell. He added: "I hope that next year he only does the X Factor. It's a much bigger gig."

Yes I saw her. She had travelled all the way from Japan just to see Simon Cowell! I think that 2 of the judges said yes to her just to worry Simon!

Mum's X-Factor excape
Mum auditions as she flees 'threat of death'

A single mum auditioned for X Factor after escaping an ex-lover she feared could kill her.

Natasha Benjamin, 28, arrived at the Birmingham auditions with daughter Jasmine, seven, after fleeing for her life.

The tearful mother reveals her dramatic story before performing Toni Braxton's Unbreak My Heart in tonight's ITV1 show.

She tells the judges: "We've been through a lot over the past couple of years and I feel that I've put her through a lot.

"I left a violent relationship and it got to the point where a weapon was used and I could have lost my life. Since then I've moved away from my home, my family and everything. Right now feels like a turning point and I want my daughter to see me actually achieve something and get further in life."

Meanwhile furious hopeful Kelly Northall, who said she sang like Whitney Houston, branded the judges "w*****s" after they booted her off the show.

She had to be led away by a security guard after Simon Cowell said she "sounded like a dog barking". Kelly, from Walsall, lost her rag when he added that far from being the new Whitney she was "more like Lassie".
