Westlife star says DJ is top of the class

WESTLIFE singer Shane Filan has tipped Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman to win Comic Relief Does Fame Academy.

The Irish crooner has been so impressed with Edith's singing on the reality TV show that he is backing her to go all the way.

Shane, who covered Come Fly With Me on the band's swing album Allow Us To Be Frank, said: 'I caught the night they were doing the swing songs.

'Edith was very good. I watched her just before I went on stage.

'It's a great idea and Edith clearly likes singing. She did a very good version of Come Fly With Me and I couldn't knock it at all. Good luck to her. I'd definitely like her to win.

'Of all the people, I probably know Edith better than anybody because she has interviewed us loads of times over the years.

'She always has a decent thing to say about us. She's a nice girl so it would be cool if she won.'

Edith, whose parents run a hotel in Anstruther, Fife, is one of two Scots left in the competition, which is helping to raise funds for the Comic Relief charity.

Last night, she sang her rendition of the Eurythmics' classic Sweet Dreams.

Edith said: 'I'm giving it a bit of Annie Lennox.'

Ex-Monarch Of The Glen actress Dawn Steele, 29, from Glasgow, sang What I Am.

Actor Ade Edmondson, EastEnders' Kim Medcalf, Corrie's Debra Stephenson and Top Of The Pops presenter Reggie Yates also took part in last night's show. They were competing ahead of Friday's final.

In addition to their solo spots, Ade, Edith, Dawn and Reggie performed It Ain't What You Do.

Earlier, the students had enjoyed a workout with the Royal Ballet's principal artist Darcey Bussell, while Edith gave Reggie guitar lessons. When Darcey stood on one leg while pointing the other one vertically in the air, Ade said: 'That ain't gonna happen.'

The ex-Young Ones star, who was suffering from a sore throat, said: 'Why can't doctors give you a magic solution? This has happened to me lots of times. There must be a magic pill. Elton John must have one.'

Edith, 30, said she was disappointed at the departure of DIY SOS host Nick Knowles on Monday night.

She said: 'We lost a perfect gentleman. It's getting harder and harder when people go.'

Yesterday, the students relaxed with some spa treatments.

Edith joked: 'My only concern was the foot spa which had some contraption to draw toxins out. The colour of the water after my feet had been in five minutes resembled urine. Reggie's looked like milk. Should I be worried?'

Edith added: 'Thanks again, you're helping an amazing cause.'
