The finale of China's version of "Pop Idol" drew hundreds of millions of viewers, but fears over voting may trump ratings when it comes to the show's renewal.

Chinese censors are concerned over the talent contest's "imitation of a democratic society" by letting TV viewers cast votes for their favorite performer, the Times of London reported Monday.

Sources said censors were concerned the democratic methods used to select the winner from 120,000 entrants would stir trouble, the Times said.

Li Yuchun, 21, received 3.5 million text message votes and was crowned Super Girl 2005 in a live broadcast Friday night.

The show reportedly drew even more viewers than the estimated 400 million who watched the Chinese New Year Festival Gala, state media said, without giving an exact figure for the Friday night finale.

BEIJING -- The frenzy around China's hit TV singing contest "Super Girl Voice" continued a week after the second season finale with the publication of a book and the launch of an online version of the contest, local media reported Friday. An "American Idol" for the Chinese masses from provincial broadcaster Hunan Satellite TV, "Super Girl Voice" broke ratings records when a lanky androgynous songstress from Sichuan garnered 3.5 million text message votes from fans from China's 340 million TV households (HR 8/30). Fifty thousand copies of the book "I'm Crazy for the Super Girls," went on sale this week and were snapped up in the capital by fans eager to read behind-the-scenes details of the lives of winner Li Yuchun and runner-up Zhou Bichuan. SHANGHAI, China (AP) - They've already conquered the television ratings. Now China's Super Girls - contestants in an American Idol-style singing contest - have set a record for the fastest-selling concert tickets.
All 6,000 floor seats to the Oct. 6 show at Shanghai's main soccer stadium were snapped up on Tuesday's first day of sales, Shanghai's Youth Daily newspaper reported Wednesday.

Half of the 39,000 stadium seats also sold out on Tuesday's first day, the paper said. Ticket prices range from $6 to $72 US.

That beat the sell-rate of major acts who have performed at the stadium, including Hong Kong star Andy Lau and Taiwanese heart throb Jay Chou, the paper said. Lau took about a month to sell all the floor seats at his most recent Shanghai concert, it said.

"The draw of the Super Girls leaves the heavenly kings of pop in their dust," the paper said.

More than 400 million people tuned in for last month's three-hour show finale, after which fans voted for their favourite performers. The broadcast beat the ratings record traditionally held by national broadcaster China Central Television's annual Lunar New Year special.

Fans will choose who they want to see at next month's concert in Shanghai, with the top 10 vote-winners appearing on stage. The show's champion, 21-year-old Li Yuchun, and her two runners-up are almost sure to appear.

The frenzy surrounding the show sent groups of fans carrying posters of their favourite contestants into shopping malls and city streets to lobby for their picks.

A mini-industry in Super Girl knick-knacks has also sprung up, with one store offering tea mugs emblazoned with Li's image for 30 yuan $4.
