Around this time last year, I stood in line at "American Idol" auditions in Cleveland for a day and a half, hoping my boyfriend would get a shot at impressing Randy, Simon and Paula. I would never do that again. However, there are many of you who are preparing to do the very same thing on Thursday at Soldier Field. I am a firm believer in passing on life lessons, so let me share some "Idol" audition wisdom. Listen carefully -- I've been there; I know.

The line starts at 6 a.m. Thursday. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT get there at 1 a.m., hoping for a good place in line. As a matter of fact, you don't really need to be there at 6. Everyone will get to audition. Thursday is reserved for the media to get pictures of all the suckers waiting in line. Auditions start on Friday. In Cleveland, you could walk up the morning of tryouts, get a wristband, sign a waiver and sing in a few hours, hence skipping the 36-hour hell that everyone else dealt with.

Read the waiver. You're signing a lot of your rights away, so be sure you know what you're getting into.

Do not arrive dressed in your performance gear. There will be time and places to primp and change clothes.

You will not meet Randy, Simon and Paula. At least not this week. There are several rounds of auditions. The judges won't be here until sometime next week. If you are lucky enough to make the producers' first cut, you will have to return for a possible second and third cut before suffering Simon's wrath.

Know your voice's capabilities. Do not succumb to the temptation to show off in line unless your voice can handle it. There will be karaoke set up, but don't wear yourself out. It can be lots of fun to just watch others. Or, take a book, cards or something else to pass the time.

You will need to pack a few things -- a change of clothes, deodorant, toiletries, an umbrella, food and water. They may not let you bring the food into the stadium, but try to smuggle in a few granola bars. Otherwise, you'll need plenty of money to buy the overpriced concession-stand junk.

They are looking for personality, not just a good voice. You'll get 10 seconds to impress the producers. Kick it up into high gear. And they're looking for pop songs. It's not the right venue for show tunes.
