UK release date: 17 October 2005 -----------------------------------------
The BBC reality TV show Fame Academy was meant to produce a whole new generation of singers, but it's rather seemed as if the show's been somewhat cursed. Lemar's been the only successful graduate, with David Sneddon, Malachi, Ainslie, Sinead Quinn and Alistair Griffin all dispatched straight back to obscurity. Alex Parks, winner of the show's second series, seemed as if she may break this pattern. She stood out from the pack by being a genuinely distinctive singer, and the original material on her first album hinted at a promising career - especially the haunting single Maybe That's What It Takes. This comeback single though, is disappointing. It's dreary beyond belief, with no memorable tune in sight. Even Parks' voice, which swooped and soared so memorably, sounds ordinary, swamped somewhat by the rather too lush production. With no covers at all on her forthcoming second album Honesty, it's make or break time for Parks. This is not a great single by any means, and a rather odd way of heralding the comeback of one who's been gone so long. Hopefully, the rest of the album will be more memorable than this. Alex Parks From the Label Honesty, is a largely self-composed album (with some co-writes by Shakespear's Sister's Marcella Detroit, Alisha's Attic's Karen Poole and veteran British folkstress Judie Tzuke.) Alex says, "Every song on the album is true, and about something that really happened. I got very emotional making the album. I wanted to call it 'Honesty' because it's all so bare, I felt like I really wanted to show ME!" The first single "Looking For Water" is a beautiful anthemic ballad which was inspired by a friend of Alex's who "takes from people all the time, 'cos they're too fragile to give to you." Alex has been out of the spotlight for 18 months now, so what's been happening since then? "I've been growing up and having to fend for myself. The two big things for me have been being on my own and moving to London and making this album." Recorded mostly in LA with producer Greg Wells (Rufus Wainwright), Alex is over the moon with how it turned out, "I know it has taken some time, but I wanted to work until the album was exactly how I wanted it to be. It's been a fantastic experience to work with such amazing producers, it has shone a whole new light onto everything. I'm very excited about the new material." This item will be released on October 24, 2005. You may order it now and we will dispatch it to you when we receive it from our supplier. |
