FORMER X Factor winner Steve Brookstein yesterday warned it was better to come second.
Crooner Steve won the show last year but has failed to make his mark on the pop industry.
And he warned of the dangers of being tied into a duff record deal.
The 37-year-old said: "It's not quite turned out how I thought. My advice to the finalists would be to come second.
"The winner won't get £1million in the bank, just a record deal.
"The record company walks away with millions, the finalist will come away with £100,000 - and will be tied into a record deal that they don't want. Unless they do exactly what the record company wants and plays ball, then they're dead in the water."
