X Factor winner tipped for top spot

X Factor winner Shayne Ward is expected to fight off competition from current chart-topper the JCB Song to land this year's Christmas Number One, according to a music retailer.

The Christmas chart falls on Christmas Day for the first time this year since 1994, when East 17 won the battle with Stay Another Day.

The current number one, Nizlopi's quirky song about a digger, is "proving a real grower", according to HMV, and will have the advantage of three days of extra sales. But the retailer said that if just 2% of the audience who sat down to watch the X Factor buy Shayne's single, it would be enough to land him the Christmas Number One.

The 21-year-old's single That's My Goal will not hit the shops until Wednesday.

But his record label Sony BMG is sending out more than 700,000 copies of the single to music stores across the country, and HMV has placed one of its largest pre-orders of the year.

The singer is also set to benefit from a Christmas shopping surge on Christmas Eve, which as it falls on a Saturday is expected to be the biggest shopping day of the year.

HMV singles buyer Stewart Allan said: "At one point, a few weeks back, this looked a pretty open race, particularly with the absence of a major charity single. But once it was confirmed that there would be an X Factor single released in time for the Christmas chart, you always felt that all bets would be off.

"The biggest challenge to X Factor winner Shayne Ward is likely to come from the current number one, Nizlopi, particularly as the JCB Song has the advantage of three days extra sales, which must give it a chance, however small, of remaining in the top spot for a second week.

"However, given the huge momentum and massive publicity surrounding Shayne, he must now be viewed as the firm favourite."

Girls Aloud, Eminem, a re-release of the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl classic Fairytale Of New York, Westlife and Robbie Williams are all outsiders for this year's prestigious top spot. dailysnack

But the single is such a dreary dirge of a tune and the lyrics that ramble on about how hard it’s been then mumbles off with the word EGO where obviously the writer struggled to make something rhyme was laughable.

I hope he gets better songs in the future and sevelops a style. but if hes wise he will get a voice coach in quick and concentrate on his stage presence

You're right, the song is dire! I guess he sings it as well as it ever could be, but I just can't see why anyone would want to listen to it.
The video is rubbish too, I saw it yesterday.

And I thought Will Young's first song was pants ::lol::

The X Factor winner Shayne Ward has launched his bid to be the Christmas number one by performing his single live in his home city of Manchester.

Ward, 21, sang That's My Goal before hundreds of fans - mainly teenage girls - at the Arndale Centre.

The appearance launches a promotional tour by Ward which coincides with the release of the single.

Bookies and retailers have tipped the song to clinch the coveted top spot, snatching it from Nizlopi's JCB Song.

HMV said "huge" early morning sales showed he was on course to beat the competition.

Other contenders include See the Day by Girls Aloud, Eminem's When I'm Gone and a re-release of the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl track Fairytale of New York.

Ward won the ITV1 talent contest on Saturday, winning a £1m recording contract with impresario Simon Cowell's company.

He was crowned victor after a tense final which saw rival Andy Abraham pushed into second place.

Ward, who used to work at a branch of clothing chain New Look in the Arndale Centre, was watched by his mother Philomena as he performed the song before he signed autographs and posed for photos.

He said: "It hasn't hit me yet that I have won it. It doesn't feel real, even yet. Everything has happened so quickly.

"I have had a good talk with Robbie Williams. He actually came and found me and congratulated me because he had been watching the show.

"He had been texting and voting for me to win as well.

"He said, and I am sure he really did mean it, that I'm going to have a great career.

"People have said that they can see a young him in me, and he agreed in front of me. It was fantastic."

Both HMV and Virgin retailers have tipped That's My Goal for the festive top spot. The chart will be revealed on Christmas Day.

But the unusual midweek release of The X Factor winner's single could give Nizlopi a small chance of remaining at the top for another week. Monday is the traditional day for single releases.

Bookmaker William Hill has already called Ward's single a certainty to reach number one for Christmas.

X Factor winner Shayne Ward has sold more than 313,000 copies of his debut single That's My Goal.

Experts say the song is almost certain to be number one, with some shops reporting they have sold out.

Around 250,000 copies have been sold over the counter, with the rest bought as downloads.

This makes Shayne's single the third fastest selling single of all time, behind Elton John's Candle In The Wind and Evergreen by Pop Idol's Will Young.

The Christmas chart will be revealed on Sunday.

X-cellent sales for Shayne single

X Factor winner Shayne Ward has sold 313,784 copies of his single on its first day of release.

That's My Goal has become the third fastest-selling single of all time behind Elton John's Candle In The Wind and Evergreen by Will Young.

Retailers were swamped by fans with some stores selling out of the record.

Around 250,000 copies were sold over the counter and the rest as internet downloads.

That's My Goal is now so certain to bag the Christmas number one spot that bookmakers have stopped taking bets on it.

Will Young's Evergreen, released after he won Pop Idol, sold 403,027 copies on its first day of release in 2002.

Gennaro Castaldo of HMV said: "Day one sales of That's My Goal are truly astounding - nothing short of incredible.

"We haven't seen anything as big as this since Will Young's Evergreen.

"It is the second fastest-selling non-charity single of all time and it's telling that the one record to beat it was another product of a TV talent show.

"So many millions of people watch these shows that it only needs a proportion of them to buy the single for it to achieve massive sales."

It was inevitable...calculated and contrived. Like most 'releases', nowadays.

Nizlopi is the exception to the rule. An overnight success after three years. Great stuff. And from Warwickshire, too. :D
