AXE FACTOR
09/03/07
X FACTOR boss Simon Cowell has sensationally ditched host Kate Thornton and judge Louis Walsh from the show.

Mr Nasty’s shock decision brought major rows and tears behind the scenes of the hit ITV talent show.

Kate and Louis were only told they were axed hours before the news was made public.

Cowell is said to be wooing Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, 33, to replace Louis who has been on the panel for three years.

Third judge Sharon Osbourne, 54, will stay – but Cowell is hoping to bring in a black or mixed race American singer – like Paula Abdul, 44, or LaToya Jackson, 50 – as a fourth judge.

Multi-millionaire Cowell is also looking for a new male host.

In the frame are said to be Xtra Factor’s Ben Shephard, 32, Big Brother’s Little Brother host Dermot O’Leary, 33, Fame Academy’s Patrick Kielty, 36, and ITV fave Vernon Kay, 32.

A source said: “This is a major shock for everyone concerned and it’s caused real sparks.

“Both Kate and Louis got a call on Wednesday night that they’d been dumped.

“They were devastated.

“Kate was in tears because rumours went around last year that she was on her way out and yet Simon went public and claimed he wanted to keep her.

“Now it seems he was talking rubbish and planned to dump her all along.

“It’s also a shock for Louis who was really liked on the show. No one has any idea why he’s gone.”

Last night blonde Kate, 34, put on a brave face and said: “Presenting X Factor has been fantastic. I wish the new host every success.”

Westlife boss Louis, 54, has also been with the show since it began three years ago.

Close friends say that privately he is ‘completely at a loss’ to understand why Cowell, 47, has dumped him from the series.

But last night he graciously said: “I have decided to leave to completely focus my energy on my job as an artist manager.”

However in a subtle dig at Cowell, he added: “I have had a fantastic time being part of X Factor and have become great friends with Sharon.”

ITV’s director of entertainment and comedy Paul Jackson paid tribute to the axed stars.

He said: “Louis has been a first class mentor and judge for his acts on X Factor for three years, guiding Shayne Ward to win series two.

“It’s fantastic that he will remain with the show in an off-air management capacity, giving acts the benefit of his knowledge and experience.

“Kate is one of the most experienced live presenters on UK television and has achieved the impossible in keeping the judges in line for three years.”

Auditions start next month for the next series of X Factor which is due to be screened in the summer.

In a further shake-up, the show’s age limit is to be lowered to 14 and the contest will now have four categories – young male pop idols 14-25; young female pop idols 14-25; groups; and over-25s.

Last night bookies William Hill opened betting on the new host – and despite Cowell’s claim that he wants a fella, they made Cat Deeley, 30, the 8/11 favourite. dailystar

Simon sacks Louis and Kate
There were tears and tantrums in the X Factor camp after Simon Cowell revealed he’s axing Louis Walsh and Kate Thornton from the show.

Simon hitched up his high-waisted trousers (if that’s even possible) and presented the pair with their P45s in a bid to give the show a radical facelift. Sharon Osbourne, who knows a thing or two about facelifts herself, has not been shown the door.

“This is a major announcement for everyone concerned and it’s caused real sparks,” says a well-placed insider. “Both Kate and Louis got a call on Wednesday about the future of the show.

“Kate was the subject of rumours going round last year that she was on her way out. Yet it was claimed in public that she would be staying. Now it seems the plan was to dump her all along.” Ah, it’s a tough world out there, Kate.

“It’s also a shock for Louis who was really liked on the show,” says the source. “No one has any idea why he’s gone.” Well, quite - he does have his finger on the pulse after all. Those MacDonald Brothers were brilliant.

Both Kate and Louis have put on a brave face since hearing the news. “Presenting X Factor has been fantastic,” said Kate last night. “I wish the next host every success.”

Meanwhile, Louis will focus on what he does best – turning on his Random Bland Irish Boy Band Generator and seeing what it spits out. Next up: Westzone – we hear they’re going to be a real hit. Possibly.

“I’ve decided to leave to completely focus my energy on my job as an artist manager,” says Louis, artfully skirting the “sacking” incident. “I have had a fantastic time being part of X Factor and have become great friends with Sharon.” No mention of Simon though, funnily enough. Names on the shortlist to replace the Lou and Kate veer from the reasonably sensible to the downright perplexing, including Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, Paula Abdul and GMTV’s Ben Shepherd.

X Factor Axes

The X Factor has become somewhat of an institution on our fair isle.

The three bickering judges, a bunch of hopefuls and a bubbly blonde presenter...

But it appears to be time for a change.

Two of the shows main names have been given the chop - in the form of Louis Walsh and host Kate Thornton.

Shock, horror... times are achanging.

But how did Kate and Louis take the bombshell?

Kate said: "Presenting The X Factor these last three years has been fantastic and I truly believe I have taken the show as far as I can.

"I wish the new host every success; it will be an experience they will never forget.

"I'm looking forward to getting stuck into some new programmes with ITV."

Could it be they're putting on a brave face?

Louis, who has become known for his wee run-ins with the other judges, said: "After three incredible years, I have decided to leave The X Factor to completely focus my energy on my day job as an artist manager.

"I will be having the busiest year of my career with Westlife, Shayne Ward and the relaunch of Boyzone.

"I am also looking forward to continuing my work with Simon and The X Factor team managing the stars from this year's series."

A spokeswoman said no new hosts or judges had been lined up yet but they are adapting the show to include four categories of contestants.

They're lowering the age limit to 14 and splitting the 14-25 year olds into girls and boys.

Kate & Louis exit X Factor

LOUIS WALSH and Kate Thornton will not return to The X Factor.

The Irish judge - who has acted as a mentor to the ITV1 talent show contestants for the past three series - will continue to play a role behind-the-scenes, it was announced.

But show presenter Thornton will be replaced by a new host.

In another twist, it was revealed tonight that TWO new judges would join Sharon Osbourne and Simon Cowell instead of Louis.

The changes were announced by ITV today and come alongside a rejig of The X Factor's winning formula.

WHY I AXED LOUIS AND KATE

10/03/07
SIMON Cowell has revealed how he was forced to treat the X Factor like Corrie – by changing the cast to keep it a ratings hit.

The multi-millionaire exclusively revealed he was under pressure from ITV to shake up the show, and that meant judge Louis Walsh and host Kate Thornton getting the boot.

The news stunned fans and viewers, with many thinking Cowell was living up to his nickname of telly’s Mr Nasty.

But the record boss, who spoke to the Daily Star from his luxury pad in Los Angeles, said it was not all his doing.

He revealed: “ITV wanted to make some changes to the show. They likened it to Coronation Street.

“You have to change and add to the cast every couple of years. It’s how you keep a show successful.”

This meant the 47-year-old record chief was pushed into a corner to change the show’s personnel when it returns this summer.

Two new judges will sit alongside Cowell and Sharon Osbourne, 54, and there will also be a new host.

Asked why Westlife boss Walsh, 54, had been sacked, Cowell said: “The honest answer is we tried to keep Louis.

“But he couldn’t commit to another season. He has a lot of things on the go, like the Boyzone reunion.”

On 34-year-old Kate’s shock exit – which confirmed rumours which first circulated last year – Cowell was coy.

He was one of the first to dismiss stories about her being given the push and he has now hinted that he would have kept her if it had been up to him.

But he admitted: “Like I said … ITV wanted changes.”

Of the new-look show, Cowell added: “There will be four judges. I know there have already been a lot of names put about. But the decision hasn’t been made.

“However, it’s fair to say there are a number of people under consideration.”
Cowell refused to be drawn on names in the frame such as Chris Moyles, 33, La Toya Jackson, 50, or Paula Abdul, 44.

He smiled: “There are a lot of people being considered, that’s all I can say.”
On the topic of Kate’s replacement, he was also tight-lipped although TV insiders think Ben Shepherd, 31, Patrick Kielty, 36, and Dermot O’Leary, 33, are contenders.

Ahead of the start of the X Factor auditions next month, Cowell is still busy filming the TV series American Idol.

And for the first time in the show’s history, he is staging a special charity bash to help children and young people in extreme poverty in America and Africa.

American Idol is joining forces with the Fox TV network and the Charity Projects Entertainment Fund (CPEF) to hold a two-night fund-raiser on April 24 and 25.

The shows, dubbed Idol Gives Back, will feature the remaining six finalists from the talent show performing “life anthems” – songs about hope and compassion.

And joining them for the event will be a host of stars including Gwen Stefani, 37, Pink, 27, Michael Bublé, 31, Annie Lennox, 52, and Il Divo.

Even comic creation, Kazakhstan journalist Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen, 35), will appear.

The event is the brainchild of comedy writer and charity campaigner Richard Curtis, 50, who has also been behind Comic Relief in the UK.

Cash raised from phone votes during the TV bash will go to helping youngsters.

Cowell said: “When Richard Curtis comes knocking on your door it is hard to say no, to be honest. But I said to him if it is in America we have to make sure that American charities are properly looked after.

“So a lot of the money raised will benefit charities within the US, such as Hurricane Katrina rebuilding.”

Cowell and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, 32, recently travelled to Africa to see for themselves the poverty and disease there – as well as the schemes that are under way to fight them.

He added:“It was the longest day of my life. But these people have to live it every day.”

Axed Louis Walsh lambasts 'outdated' Cowell

On screen, they have often clashed over which act to axe. But when Louis Walsh was himself unceremoniously dumped from the X Factor, he couldn't resist giving fellow judge Simon Cowell a sharp dose of his own acid-tongued medicine.

Today the Irish music mogul unleashed an unprecedented attack on his former colleague, accusing him of being a pompous egomaniac with no musical integrity, taste or genuine feelings for contestants.

Steve has the ideal X appeal

COULD sexy Steve Jones become the next presenter of X Factor?

Showbiz insiders have tipped the gorgeous Rhondda boyo to be in the running to host the next series of the show when it returns this summer.

After bubbly Kate Thornton's shock exit from the show, Simon Cowell admitted he was under pressure to make changes to keep his hit a ratings winner.

"ITV wanted to make some changes to the show. They likened it to Coronation Street. You have to change and add to the cast every couple of years. It's how you keep a show successful," Cowell said.

Come and get us Simon

RADIO One bigmouth DJ Chris Moyles has issued a come-and-get-me plea to X Factor boss Simon Cowell.

The 33-year-old is desperate to sit on the show’s judging panel following the news that Louis Walsh is getting the boot.

And American pop princess Jessica Simpson is keen to take the other slot on this year’s four-judge bench.

ITV Under Fire For Lowering X Factor Age To 14
Campaigners worried for child wellbeing...

3/14/2007

ITV has come under fire once again, this time for lowering the minium age for participation in X Factor to 14.

The broadcast regulator Ofcom defines 14 years old as a “child” and their code requires broadcasters respect the “emotional welfare and dignity” of children.

With Simon Cowell’s famed dismissals of contestants, the show has come under fire for allowing children to be put in such a position.

A spokesman for the Family and Parenting Institute told the Times Online: “We are concerned about the impact that a barrage of criticism will have on young people.

“It could send an unfortunate message to other children about bullying. We expect the producers to give proper support and counselling for young people who are thrust into the spotlight by the show.”

ITV insisted that they would take measures to protect the welfare of children contending. A spokeswoman said: “They will have a chaparone at all times. Criticism by Simon and the judges will be mitigated by the age of the youngest contestants. Often they help the younger ones, especially if they are nervous.”

Chris Cloke, NSPCC head of child protection awareness, warned that ITV must tread very carefully in their treatment of the children: “it will be vital that ITV ensure they have robust child protection measures in place and that all young participants and their parents are made fully aware of what they are entering into.”

However, ITV added that Simon would not be expected to tone down his opinions: “Simon is honest with everyone, whether they have a genuine talent or are just wasting everyone’s time.”
