The O Factor - EXCLUSIVE

X Factor bosses last night sensationally appointed Dermot O’Leary as the show’s new presenter.

He will replace blonde Kate Thornton, who was axed in the recent shake-up.

Cheeky Dermot, 33, has been signed up to present the next TWO series of the ITV1 hit.

X Factor supremo Simon Cowell, 47, was keen to give the hit talent show a fresher look with a major shake-up.

And Big Brother’s Little Brother host Dermot was last night “thrilled” with his big-money job.

He said: “I was very flattered to be offered the job to host such a hugely successful show. I’m really looking forward to working with Simon and the team on the kind of Saturday night entertainment show I grew up watching.”

But fans of Big Brother need not fret – Dermot will still present his C4 show.

The X Factor shake-up began last night with the announcement Dermot had beaten at least five other front-runners for one of the hottest jobs in telly.

Sexy Fearne Cotton, 24, and Cat Deeley, 30, along with Xtra Factor host Ben Shephard, 31, were also battling for the job, it is understood.

Dermot – who has also fronted BBC1’s lottery show 1 vs 100 – will join the X Factor audition tour in May, visiting city centres across the UK.

The show’s fourth series, which starts this summer, will also feature a fourth judge. Big changes on the judging panel follow the axing of Louis Walsh, 54, at the same time as presenter Kate, 34.

Among other changes, contestants will be split into four categories next time around.

They are: 14-to-24 Boys; 14-to-24 Girls; 25 and Overs and Groups.

Last night Duncan Gray, ITV’s Controller of Entertainment, said: “Dermot is a star. He’s warm, clever and funny and he was our number one choice for the job.

“We’re thrilled to have him on ITV and we’re sure he’ll keep The X Factor the nation’s number one entertainment show for many years to come.”

X Factor Executive Producer Richard Holloway added: “With each series we have always strived to make the show bigger and better.

“And this year with Dermot and four judges I’m sure the viewers are in for an ‘xtra’ special series.”

Dermot’s got the X Factor

Man of the moment Dermot O’Leary talks to RACHEL MAINWARING about presenting the X Factor...

HE can talk the hind leg off a donkey and chatty Dermot O’Leary reckons his new job is the closest he’s ever going to get to being a big-money signing footballer.

The Big brother veteran and new host of ITV1 X Factor, which started again last night, laughs: “It’s like going from a middleweight to a heavyweight!

“When Simon spoke to me and said, ‘we want you to do this job because you like people’, I’d never really thought of it like that, but the more I do the job the more I realise I can genuinely talk the hind legs off a donkey!”

The long-awaited BAFTA award-winning show returned for a fourth series last night, complete with a fresh new format and a veritable rollercoaster ride of twists and turns.

This year the show’s judges Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne will be joined by Kylie’s little sister Dannii Minogue, as well as Irish pop impresario Louis Walsh, who is back with a vengeance after his much publicised sacking and controversial reinstatement.

“Sharon you just want to cuddle from the minute you see her – I’d heard about the Osbourne effect but never experienced it and it is extraordinary.

“Simon is a very down to earth guy, Dannii is a far stronger woman than people give her credit for, and well, Louis is Louis!”

This year, The X Factor will also feature a brand new category that opens the competition up to performers aged 14 and over.

Contestants will be split into Boys (14 to 24’s), Girls (14 to 24’s), 25 and Overs and Groups – and all are desperate to bag that amazing £1m recording contract.

“The auditions are really interesting because some people turn up because they want to be on telly for five minutes, you’ve got your genuine punters, your self delusionals who can be quite difficult to be around, and some people turn up who’ll be over the moon to get three rejections if they get a yes out of Simon.

“It’s the Daddy syndrome! Everyone wants Daddy to love them!” he grins cheekily.

During the nail-biting audition phase of The X Factor, Dermot’s on hand to offer the contestants encouragement and a comforting shoulder to cry on as they endure their nerve-wracking performance in front of Simon and co, as well as presiding over the always opinionated judging panel once the show reaches the live stages.

“Some of the contestants’ real-life stories are so emotional. There’s a mother-of-two whose husband dropped dead last year – he was only in his twenties and she’d promised him she would give it a go, which is why she was there.

“I’d rather turn the camera off with those types of stories because I was welling up as she was telling me about it,” he admits.

But having watched hundreds upon hundreds of young wannabes put themselves through the now infamous audition process, Dermot says he has a few words of wisdom for any potential stars willing to face the wrath of Mr Cowell et al.

“From what I’ve seen so far – know your limits,” he laughs.

And if the judges themselves start to misbehave, Dermot believes he has the perfect remedy to keep them in check.

“With a big stick – I think corporal punishment is the only way to go!” he grins.

the judges view: Simon Cowell

“It’s great having Louis back and if I’m honest Sharon and I did miss not having him on the panel,” judge Simon Cowell admits.

“And Dannii is a great addition to the show – she’s been in the business since she was a child so has a lot of valuable experience, as well as bringing a new dynamic to the judging panel – plus she’s far better looking than Louis!” he grins, unable to resist a quick dig at his arch judging rival. “So far we have been working as a team at the auditions, but I am sure once we get to the live studio shows the competition between us will increase.”

the judges view: Dannii Minogue

“Simon would have to be the cheekiest, naughtiest boy I’ve ever met and is constantly making me laugh,” smiles new judge Dannii Minogue. “Louis giggles more than a girl so we have nicknamed him Louise, Sharon is always fabulous and the two of us are in constant competition to see who has the most bling on.

“And with Simon we all try to stay out of his way when he is slaying people with his honesty, but most of the time Simon and I agree on who the good and bad contestants are – if not, I tell him he’s wrong, it’s the funniest way to wind him up!

“The British public managed to wind him up enough about his high-waisted pants and he has stopped wearing those, so I think our next mission should be his hair-do.”

the judges view: Louis Walsh

“I’m hoping that I can wipe the smile off Simon’s smug face and win another series!” grins Westlife manager Louis Walsh.

“It’s fantastic to be back – being sacked was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever been through, but I’m delighted that I was rehired and back on the show.”

Louis believes that a large element behind The X Factor’s massive success in the UK is the constant banter between the judges – especially the invariably heated exchanges between himself and Simon.

“What makes the show is the fact that the three of us have a chemistry between us and we just seem to get on well – even though we all want to win!”

the judges view: Sharon Osbourne

Judge Sharon Osbourne, who has never actually won a series of The X Factor, reveals that she’s more determined than ever to get one over on her nemesis Simon Cowell this year.

“I know I am as competitive as hell because I want to win,” she grins.

But although she absolutely loves the audition days, Sharon admits there are some songs that she never, ever, wants to hear again.

“The list is Over The Rainbow, Smile, Hero and Mustang Sally,” she grimaces, adding that she has a few clever tricks up her sleeve to ensure that she emerges as the victorious judge this time around.

“Oh yes and let me tell you I have a very long sleeve!”

Dermot O'Leary: People keep pinching my bum

New presenter reveals all on latest X Factor series

Were you nervous about taking charge of the show?

It's massive for me. It's the first proper big primetime show that I've been offered and taken. I'm scared and nervous.

So you're crapping yourself?

Yeah, in a way!

How has new judge Dannii Minogue settled in?

She's a force of nature – I can't believe how well she's doing. She's done Australia's Got Talent, so she's used to it. She's got sass, she looks fantastic and she has experience. Dannii can deliver the goods.

Have any X Factor contestants got a bit frisky with you?

There's been a couple of arse pinches. I didn't mind, but at the same time I was thinking: 'Oh no!'

Has Sharon tried it on yet?

How dare you speak about Sharon like that!

X MARKS O'DREARY'S SPOT
Kevin O'Sullivan

Saturday night and, at last, it's the clash of the Titans. After milking the auditions and the stretched-out eliminations for all they were worth (not much), ITV's X Factor finally faced the full force of the Beeb's infinitely simpler Strictly Come Dancing.

It was a big moment for Dermot O'Dreary. Bland Boy had a whole new question to ask. Ever since Simon Cowell's star-free "talent" show started long ago in the summer, Dermot has been trying to master: "How much does this mean to you?"

But just as he gets it about right, the poor guy has to move on to: "Do you think you've done enough?" Yes, the wannabes and their tedious sob-stories were at the judges' houses singing the songs that could "change their lives". As soon as they'd completed their warbling, O'Leary leapt at them, mike in hand, and yelled: "Do you think... etc." That's why he gets the big bucks! Tonight, amid scenes of hysterical wailing, 12 losers will be sent home. Should be very funny.

Clearly, crazy tone-deaf shelf-stacker Icaro has to go. If oldster category supremo Louis Walsh puts this loony through he's even more clueless than I thought. In charge of the boys, Kylie's sister could score a huge hit by bursting 24-year-old Hitler Youth member lookalike Rhydian's ("my Godgiven talent") bubble. "I'd like to be knighted," said (get) Rhyd. "I'd love to meet the Queen." Which one? He's good telly though. He'll make the grade. In Marbella with the groups, Cowell was assisted by Sinitta (someone had to serve the coffee).

"I don't want to live my life anymore," wept Ci Ci of the newly-formed girlband Hope (less). Well, do us all a favour. End it. Meanwhile, over in LA, Ma Osbourne told the cry-baby girls: "The fun is over." For the viewers. Tango anyone?

‘SORRY DANNII IT’S YER SISTER I WANT’

Dermot O’Leary says he signed up for The X Factor just to meet Dannii Minogue’s sister Kylie.

The hunky host – who took over from axed Kate Thornton, 34 – has the hots for the pop princess. And despite coming close to being granted an audience with the Aussie babe in the past, his plans have always fallen flat.

However now he’s hosting The X Factor, where Dannii, 35, is a judge, his dream is about to come true. TV bosses are planning to invite Kylie, 39, on as a guest.

A thrilled Dermot, 34, said: “I have always said: ‘If you want a proper woman it’s got to be Kylie.’ “She’s been on about three shows I’ve been involved in.

But I’ve not got to meet her. “Now maybe I finally will.” Dermot will host the first of the live X Factor shows on Saturday night where all 12 acts through to the final will perform.

He says he can’t wait for the contest to hot up and see how he will handle the feuding judges – Dannii, Simon Cowell, 48, Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne, both 55, and Dannii. The Big Brother’s Little Brother star said: “I can’t wait to get my teeth into the live shows.

I know I will have to keep the judges in check. I think corporal punishment is the only way to go.” But despite their on-screen bickering and feuds, Dermot has revealed there is a side to the judging panel people rarely see.

He added: “With Sharon, you just want to cuddle her from the moment you see her. “I’d heard about ‘The Osbourne Effect’ but never experienced it.

“You can’t help saying ‘Sharon, is there any chance I can hug you?’ “Simon is very down to earth. “Dannii is a far stronger woman than people give her credit for. “And Louis is just Louis!” Dermot admits that signing up for The X Factor meant he had to juggle his summer job on BBLB with the show’s auditions all over the UK.

He said: “It was tough for me because I only had two days off all summer. “But I don’t resent it in the slightest. I can’t complain. “I mean I’m not coal mining. I’m not working in a factory. I’m doing what I always wanted. Hosting two hit TV shows.” Asked who he wanted to win, he admitted he was not allowed to name names.

But he teased: “There is one boy and one girl who stand out for me.
