Alexandra Burke is the winner of the 2008 X Factor.

The singer beat fellow finalists JLS and Eoghan Quigg to be crowned winner of the popular TV contest, which saw a total of 8 million votes from fans.

16-year-old Eoghan was the first contestant to be booted off tonight's final (December 13), with Burke beating boyband JLS in the final round. Earlier in the evening, the London singer also performed a duet with Beyonce - the pair covered Knowles' 'Listen'.

Alexandra will release her debut single - a cover version of Leonard Cohen's classic 'Hallelujah' - tonight as a digital download. The CD then hits shops on Monday (December 15) and looks certain to be this year's Christmas number 1.

Britain Won't Vote Black? X Factor Proves the Opposite

OK, so I admit it. I wasn't ill at all. I just wanted to get back to watch the X Factor Final. :). Well, if a Labour MP can spend the evening doing a live blog about it, it must have something going for it.

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley is one of my all time favourite songs and I must admit that I wasn't looking forward to it being murdered. But Alexandra sang it brilliantly and fully deserved her win.

I have to say I don't think JLS were good enough to be in the final. Their lead singer has a voice which is more suited to Bros.

It's interesting that for the second time in three years a black artist has won the popular vote. And this year the final was contested between a black female singer and a black group. Perhaps those who wrote that it would be decades before Britain has a black Prime Minister should eat their words. If you've got talent, the colour of your skin doesn't matter. That's just as true in politics as in TV talent shows.

Really enjoyed the final. Delighted to see Alexandra win. Kind of amused that there were 11 and a half Irishmen in the show last night (Dermot says he's Irish, but I'll count him as the half!). Beyonce was wonderful. Very feel-good show. ()^

It didn't grasp my attention one little bit last night. I lost interest after Diana left.

Judging by the performances they gave last night, they went in the right order, but I do not like Alexandra one little bit. As one of the comments to one of those articles above says - "only a real drama queen could compose herself to sing her new single after all that crying". I'm glad also that I am not the only one who thinks she acts very false. In my mind she is a big creep.

Everything was calculated. The story about her ill Mum released just before the semi final and then a story about an ex wanting to sell a sex tape was released before the final to make us feel sorry for her. Every star who appeared on the show, she just 'happened' to be their number one fan. She seemed to be copying Leona I thought in her style.

We have got one Leona - we don't need another one. Yes she is a good singer and her performances last night were very good, but for me, there is nothing about her that makes her stand out from the rest. I won't be buying any of her records that's for sure. I did buy Leona's and also Leon's. I have to like the person as well as the singing. Leona seems like a much nicer person than Alex. Alex just seemed very false and a bit of an actress to me (and judging by people's comments, I am not the only one to think that).

She obviously gets her talent from her Mum, who was lead singer with legendary collective Soul II Soul. Stevie Wonder tried to sign her to Motown records aged just twelve.

I agree Beyonce was very good.

I would assert, that a professional (rather than a real drama queen) would compose herself enough to sing her new single after all that crying.

Mind you, Alexandra's second rendition of the song was hardly on a par with the first - she lost her place, and sounded a bit wobbly. I would think that's perfectly understandable, given the circumstances.

Sometimes people get very emotional - but they realise they have to pull themselves together to do what needs to be done - and they do their best. That's what I think Alexandra did last night.

Maybe it is 'all calculated', but you know, I'd rather believe that she is a decent girl, who did her best, and was the public's choice to win, BECAUSE OF HER TALENTS AND ABILITIES.

I didn't know she had an ill mum - I'm sorry to hear that.

I did read the thing about the sex tape - and I thought the ex-boyfriend was a creep, never mind about Alexandra! I despise that sort of behaviour - when someone thinks they'll make a fast buck out of selling something which was never intended to be anything but private. I guess Alexandra isn't the first person to learn the hard way that it's not wise to allow yourself to be taped/recorded/within 20 feet of a camera phone!

If I was Alexandra, I wouldn't want to be as tearful and emotional as she was, last night. Heaven knows, I wished I could reach out and fix her cheeks - the way her tears were ruining her foundation and blusher was unfortunate. You know, I'm fairly certain Alex would have prefered to be serene and more composed - but this girl from a very ordinary background, who'd been rejected at the final hurdle three years ago, had now gone on to win the X-Factor, having appeared on every live episode of the highest rated TV show on British television. Big deal, actually.

I believe Alex when she says Mariah Carey and Beyonce were 'heros' of hers - after all, she must have grown up listening to their stuff, and dreaming of one day being like them.

I guess she probably admired Take That too; maybe even Britney.

I wasn't born yesterday, (both literally and symbolically!), and I don't even like the concept of Santa Claus.

But I believe a lot of human beings have a fair bit of good in them, and you know, with Alexandra, I didn't really have to look too hard to find in her something in which to admire.

Her singing is a bit similar to Leona - and people even said she sounds a bit like Beyonce. But I think last night showed that Beyonce sounds different - I happen to think Beyonce has more 'balls'...pardon my French, but I admire Beyonce's sassy attitude. Her 'Irreplaceable' is one of my top five songs, ever.

Perhaps in time, Alexandra will grow more 'balls', but I think she's got a whole lot going for her.

I'm sure certain 'spins' are put on things by the judges etc, but I believe Simon and the others when they say a contestant is genuinely nice - and Simon has said many times that Alex never whined. That leads me to suspect that a few others were a bit more prima-donna-ish. But even if they were, if I thought they had the best voice, the most talent, and the most potential, I'd hope they'd have won.
