The X Factor Mentors

Louis Walsh is to mentor the groups in the new series of The X Factor.

The Irish-born music manager has been handed the category for the fourth time in six series, and was reportedly amazed by the decision.

Walsh, 57, was given the groups after his success with the category last year.

Although band JLS did not triumph on the show they built up a loyal following and recently scored a number one in the UK singles chart with ‘Beat Again’.

Cheryl Cole, whose singer Alexandra Burke won last year’s show, will look after the girls aged 16 to 25.

Simon Cowell and Dannii Minogue have swapped roles, with Cowell being handed the over 25s and Minogue getting the boys aged 16 to 25.

Minogue won the show with the same category in 2007, after Leon Jackson swept to victory.

X-Factor to go out live on Saturdays and Sundays

----------- Image

X Factor fans are being treated to a double dose of entertainment with a brand new live Sunday night results show, ITV has confirmed.

As the show reaches the live stages on its normal Saturday night slot, it will also go out as a live show the following night and will feature guest appearances.

Programme makers say it will give viewers more time to vote for their favourite singers.

"The X Factor just keeps getting bigger and better, with last year's series breaking records as the most popular yet, so we're delighted to be offering ITV1 viewers more of what they want," said ITV's director of entertainment and comedy Elaine Bedell.

Last week it was announced that Strictly Come Dancing was abandoning its Sunday night results show in place of an extended Saturday night programme.

The new series of the X-Factor kicks off on ITV1 at 7pm on Saturday, August 22, with The Xtra Factor from 8.30pm on ITV2.

X Factor - Psychologists In The Studio

Psychologists will be on set during the new series of The X Factor to protect contestants from the pressure of appearing on the talent show.

Teams have been drafted in after the show's creator and judge Simon Cowell decided to allow the auditions to take place in front of a 3,000-strong audience instead of just four judges.

The move has been prompted by the row over the treatment of Susan Boyle, runner-up in the last series of Britain's Got Talent, who collapsed from exhaustion and was sent to The Priory clinic for treatment.

Psychologists were previously only on call, but now all 24 X Factor finalists will be given full psychological appraisals to check their state of mind.

Richard Holloway, executive producer of both of the hit ITV talent shows, said: “What we have done this year is look at our policies quite carefully and decided that we should have people with us all the way through, particularly with the pressure of audiences at the auditions.”

He said psychologists had not needed to step in at this year's auditions, which have already been filmed.

X Factor auditions were so boring I nearly walked out

Simon Cowell isn't known for his tolerant ways.

So it may come as no surprise that he nearly walked out of the X Factor after deeming the show's format 'stale'.

The 49-year-old media mogul admitted he had grown bored of the old-style audition process.

The first in the series of ITV1 show The X Factor was watched by just under 10 million viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures.

Third time unlucky for East Lancs X Factor loser

X FACTOR reject Emma Chawner failed for a third time to win over Simon Cowell despite unveiling her “secret weapon” on Saturday night’s show.

The 21-year-old appeared on the hit ITV1 show with her sister Samantha, 19, to perform Mariah Carey’s “Hero” for Simon, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue, Cheryl Cole and 1,000 people in the live audience.

But the duo, who called themselves Sister Act, failed spectacularly to win over the judges.

Cowell told Emma to never audition for the show again but the hairdresser has refused to rule out a fourth bid at stardom.
