Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi (we're still not sure who she is) are back to judge the ninth series of this enormous televised singing competition. They'll be joined by Paula Abdul's replacement, Ellen DeGeneres. As ever, the initial episodes are given over to auditions. Whereas the equivalent hopefuls in the UK are merely deluded, in the US they're deranged and have more back teeth than IQ points. They'll holler, sob and swear if they don't get picked for Hollywood week, the brutal second round.
