X Factor's tune may be about to fall flat, as audiences dwindle

There comes a time when every television programme has to face the music: and having lost 6 million viewers in just two years, The X Factor, with no Simon Cowell in sight, heads towards its final weekend of shows in front of 10,000 people in Manchester with people asking for the first time whether the format is reaching the beginning of the end.

Jahmene Douglas, the bookies' favourite, James Arthur and underdog Christopher Maloney are the three men battling it out for that "£1m record contract", but their battle of the ballads has failed to excite the public. X Factor's ratings are down 2 million on last year, when Little Mix won, with an average audience in this, the ninth season, of 8.9 million.

It was difficult for Gary because he made no secret of the fact that he really liked James all the way through, but had to be seen as supporting Christopher, as he was mentoring him. However, he probably knew that Simon didn't want Chris to win, so he made many references to the fact that Christopher wasn't in his original chosen 3, but it was the public who had chosen him as the wildcard. In other words 'Simon if Chris wins, it's not my fault!!'

I have just posted the voting stats Christine and you can see Christopher was in the lead for weeks and weeks - must be why Cowell started the nasty spin against him. Gary's smirking at Cowell's job well done tactic is despicable.

Actually it doesn't look to me as though Gary is smirking. I think he really did care for Christopher. Yes, I had read that Christopher was topping the votes each week, but to be honest, I think that Cowell spinning against him only made people vote for him all the more. The only reason that Chris stopped topping the votes, was not because Cowell was spinning against him, but because James Arthur and Ella (two good ones) ended up in the bottom two. After that, James topped the votes every week. I think that is because people (like me) really liked James but didn't bother to vote. However, when he ended up in the bottom two, we realised that we should vote. That was when I started voting for him and I imagine lots of other people did the same. I also think that gave James a jolt and he seemed to be even better than before after that. So in my opinion, the reason Chris stopped topping the votes was not due to the spin against him (which I actually think spurred people on more to vote for him, as happened with Rylan) but because loads of people who hadn't been voting, started to vote for James to avoid him being in the bottom 2 again.

I had liked James from the start and was gutted when he was in the bottom 2 with Ella of all people. It was very touch and go and although I liked Ella (she should have been in the top 3), I was really glad that James stayed as I liked him slightly better. At least Ella can say that she was knocked out by the eventual winner, but she should really have been second in my opinion, with Jahmene 3rd.

It's a shame how one comment to James on Twitter about his teeth, made him so self conscious of them that he didn't smile much. I actually like his bugs bunny teeth and think they suit him. They are part of him and not sure what he will be like if he changes them. He actually looked lovely when he smiled. It's a pity he didn't smile more. People probably thought he was miserable and ungrateful for not smiling, but I (like Tulisa) could see further than that. He came across to me as a very nice, caring person, who withheld showing his feelings because some horrible person on Twitter told him to fix his teeth.

You could see he was easy going and caring, by the way he was with his sister and also with Rylan. I will never forget, when they were at Eurodisney France and Rylan got a bonnet to put on James and said to him 'will you be my baby doll?' James said 'Do I have a choice?' Rylan said 'no', so James said 'Go on then' and Rylan put a frilly bonnet on James head!
