'Norwegian Pop Idol Kurt Nilsen stunned pop pundits by walking away with the World Idol title last night, pushing the UK’s hope Will Young to fifth place.
Nilsen, who consistently received top marks for his rendition of U2’s Beautiful Day, was the surprise winner of the show, after judges criticised his looks and image.
One even went so far as to say he has the “voice of an angel, but the looks of a hobbit”, while Simon Cowell told him that, if the contest was radio based and not on TV, he would walk it.
But after winning, Nilsen hit out at Will Young, telling a Norwegian newspaper that Young refused to shake his hand and was an “asshole”.
He said the UK Idol, who saw his second album Friday’s Child hit number one the week before the show, refused to talk to him when the cameras were not rolling.
Rumours are circling that Young was forced into doing the show, which he publicly admitted could turn into a “tacky Eurovision”, and was keen to distance himself from the experience.'
