Press Association Saturday December 17, 2005 10:48 PM Cricket star Darren Gough danced his way to victory to become the first male winner of BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing. The Yorkshire sportsman, who was a novice dancer 10 weeks ago, swept to glory on the dancefloor with partner Lilia Kopylova. Gough, who plays for Essex and England, saw off rivals, athlete Colin Jackson and DJ Zoe Ball, in the live final of the third series. Jackson, who entered the final as hot favourite, came a close second while Ball, who was bookies favourite to win for most of the series, finished in third place. A delighted Gough, 35, said: "I thought I would be saying this 10 weeks ago but it has been an amazing journey for a guy who has never danced." Referring to his dance partner and teacher Lilia, he said: "She has turned me into some sort of dancer. I cannot believe I had the confidence to do that tonight. I could not have wished for a better partner." Gough, wearing a black shirt and trousers with sliver sequinned braces, told presenter Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly that he believed he had captured the nation's hearts and won their votes because his dancing had come on leaps and bounds over the course of the series. "I started with nothing and I have worked myself up to something decent," he said. As Forsyth presented the winners with with their trophy he joked: "You have always been my favourite." The BBC will be hoping that the drama of tonight's show will win the fierce ratings battle with ITV's X Factor final which was aired simultaneously. |

ENGLAND cricket star Darren Gough danced his way to victory to become the first male winner of BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing. Yorkshireman Goughie, 35, was a novice when he started on the hit show 10 weeks ago. But he swept to glory on the dancefloor with Russian partner Lilia Kopylova. Gough, who plays for Essex and England, saw off rivals, athlete Colin Jackson and DJ Zoe Ball, in the live final of the third series. Jackson, who entered the final as hot favourite, came a close second, though a dodgy last dance could have cost him the title. Ball was the bookies' favourite to win for most of the series but in the end had to settle for third place. A staggering 5million votes were cast, raising £1.5million for Children in Need. A delighted Gough said: “I thought I would be saying this 10 weeks ago but it has been an amazing journey for a guy who has never danced. “Lilia has turned me into some sort of dancer. I cannot believe I had the confidence to do that tonight. I could not have wished for a better partner.” Gough, wearing a black shirt and trousers with sliver sequinned braces, told presenter Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly that he believed he had captured the nation’s hearts and won their votes because his dancing had come on leaps and bounds over the course of the series. He added: “I started with nothing and I have worked myself up to something decent." Gough had the backing off all his former England cricketing team-mates and current star Kevin Pietersen was there in person to cheer him on, having just flown back for Pakistan. As Forsyth presented the winners with with their trophy he joked: “You have always been my favourite.” Twelve celebrities originally took part in the series, including ex-EastEnders actress Patsy Palmer, snooker player Dennis Taylor and celebrity chef James Martin. Gough takes the ballroom crown from former EastEnders actress Jill Halfpenny who stormed to victory over athlete Denise Lewis in last year’s final. SUNonLine |

what a great show, I've really enjoyed it - I'm going to miss watching Ian dance every week and Brunno's witty remarks (the one last night to Len about 'head' lol). I still think Colin or Zoe ( in particular) were the best dancers and should have won - mostly because I'd rather either of them competing against the Americans in the SCD special. However, it was great to see Darren go from being a hopeless dancer at the start of the series to a reasonably good dancer at the end. I think Darren's best dance of the whole series was the 'freestyle' dance he did at the very end of last night's show.WOW - he really did, as the judges said 'save his best till last' well done to him and Lilia. |

I totally agree Geena. For me, Zoe and Ian were a delight to watch and I wanted them to win for their dancing ability but last night I really wanted Darren and Lilia to win because he has tried so hard and really taken to dancing... plus their dances last night were spot on, particularly their last dance. Unlike Colin and Erin's dance which was really awful I thought! |

Sunday, 18th Dec 2005 NewsoftheWorld -------------------------------------------
CRICKETER Darren Gough became the first MALE winner of Strictly Come Dancing last night after bowling over viewers in a nail-biting finale. The 35-year-old former England pace ace overcame a "lifelong fear of disco dancing" to put in a stunning freestyle routine with partner Lilia Kopylova, 29. And he wore a smile as wide as his eyes as the result was announced, saying: "It's been an amazing journey. "I'd never danced before, and the public liked the fact I started from nothing and worked my way up." Colin Jackson, 38, and partner Erin Boag, 30, crashed out after dancing with mannequins for their final performance. And judge Bruno Tonioli branded THEM dummies for trying the comedy stunt. He said: "This belonged to an end of pier summer show. It's a gimmick." More than five million viewers voted for the finalists and watched Zoe Ball, 35, exit in third place, leaving Colin Jackson and Darren to a head-to-head. Earlier the judges' voting had Zoe and Colin in the lead. But a huge surge of votes from the public saw the Yorkshire-born cricketer come from last to first to scoop the crown as he and Lilia wowed viewers with their foxtrot and paso doble performances. The show also raised £1.5million for BBC Children in Need from the phone votes. |

| Post subject: | I HAVE PROVED MACHO GUYS CAN DANCE |
19 December 2005 GOUGH WIN STRICTLY FOR THE BLOKES By Fiona Cummins Showbiz Reporter STRICTLY Come Dancing champion Darren Gough yesterday insisted his unlikely triumph proved "macho guys" really can strut their stuff. And the 14-stone cricketer, who defeated Zoe Ball and Colin Jackson in the final of the BBC1 ballroom show, revealed he may now even open a dance studio of his own. Gough, Dazzler to his England team-mates, said: "It has been such an amazing experience and I've loved every minute of it. "I hope I've shown people that you can be a macho guy and still dance. "I am a big bloke. I think the public has said 'well, if he can do it, I can'. I think that's why they have got behind me, they are just amazed. "I just hope it has given people the confidence to go out there and dance because it is a great thing to do." The Essex bowler, 35, and partner Lilia Kopylova wowed the public with a John Travolta-style raunchy disco routine in the final - watched by 10million viewers - as he became the first male winner of the show. But he admitted he had been terrified at the start of the 10-week series. The judges also gave him little chance of success in the early weeks. Craig Revel Horwood had criticised his "spatula hands" while Bruno Tonioli said he was the "Incredible Hulk" of the competition. But the Yorkshireman, who missed the Ashes through injury, said: "Throughout the show, I developed a real passion for dance, which I think became obvious." As he collected his glitter ball trophy on Saturday night in front of his two boys, Liam, 10, and Brennan, seven, thrilled Gough said: "I think people like the fact I started with nothing and I worked myself up." Gough split with his wife Anna in 2002 after an eight-year marriage but friends are keeping their fingers crossed that they can be reunited. One said: "The discipline of dancing has brought out a softer side to Darren and some of us hope it could bring them back together." Gough said: "I would never say no. We have always got on well." He added: "Dancers make better lovers than cricketers. "When you dance with a partner like Lilia you have to have total trust. You have to get really close with a lot of eye contact." Latin American champ Lilia, 29, who admitted she had not even known who Gough was when first paired with him, said she thought they "didn't stand a chance" at first. But she added: "The best thing about him is that he really knows how to work in a team. "He has really worked so, so well, and he has worked so hard. He has just been amazing." Former athlete Jackson was second and TV presenter Ball trailed in third after five million people voted. Gough is hoping to be selected for England's trip to India in March, but his agent said the dance studio was certainly a "possibility" for the future. Mirror |
