Foot injury could force Kate Garraway to pull out of Strictly Come Dancing

Kate Garraway may be forced to pull out of this year's Strictly Come Dancing after suffering a painful foot injury.

The GMTV presenter developed painful tendonitis in her foot during rehearsals and has reportedly been ordered by doctors to stay off her feet.

The news came as a huge blow to the star – particularly as the popular dance contest begins in a few days time - and Garraway now fears that she'll be unable to compete.

Kelly Brook exclusive

She's Strictly Come Dancing's sexiest star, but Kelly Brook's red-hot routines won't be the only thing making this series sizzle.

Being partnered with notorious ladies' man Brendan Cole will also generate plenty of gossip.

Yet when 27-year-old Kelly was told who she would be paired with for the hit BBC1 show, which returns tonight, she confesses: "I just said, 'Pleeeease, not Brendan!'"

Speaking to the Mirror ahead of our exclusive serialisation of her new book, Life Style, next week, Kelly adds: "As it's turned out, we get on very well.

"We're the same age, we've got the same taste in music and we're both competitive. We want to create great chemistry and have people thinking: 'Oh God! They're definitely at it!'"

Even so, she insists her fiance, Titanic star Billy Zane, has nothing to worry about.

Kelly says: "I told Billy I was teamed up with this guy who had a reputation but was actually very nice. Brendan is far more vulnerable than he lets on. "It's great to work with someone so talented. I can be challenged and not have to sit there like a dummy. Oh, that's a bit controversial, isn't it?"

For now, Kelly is more worried about twirling around in skimpy costumes during the more energetic dances. After all, viewers might get to see more than she'd bargained for...

"Rehearsing the jive has got me a bit panicky," she admits.

"I think they want me to bounce over the stage and pop out."

Containing her voluptuous boobs is certainly going to be a tricky task for the Beeb's costume department - particularly as Kelly has recently gone up a couple of bra sizes.

"I've grown to a 30FF," she says. "When I put on the newsized bra I instantly felt better.

My boobs were under my chin. "I was very conscious of my chest at stage school. You're in leotard and tights every day.

You had the boys watching through the window as you're doing jetes. It was embarrassing... but once I got to 16 I realised it wasn't too bad."

Since then Kelly, who divides her time between her farmhouse in Kent and her home in LA, has celebrated her curves.

"You don't have to be a size zero just because that's what so many celebs are," she says.

"Men's mags are screaming out that they love bigger girls.

"Guys don't pay that much attention to the parts you're self-conscious about anyway.

Low lighting, candles, glass of wine, high heels - always high heels and keep them on to the last minute.

Can't go wrong. "Besides, those squidgy bits are usually what your man loves most."

In the last 10 years Kelly has found success as an actress in Hollywood, created a lingerie and swimwear range for New Look and is about to launch a perfume, Kelly Brook. Her new book Life Style - part autobiography, part fashion guide - is yet another string to her bow.

She has come a long way since her early humiliating experience on The Big Breakfast in 1999 - she was dropped as co-host following criticism of her ditzy presenting style. She says: "I was thrilled to land such a big job, but then for it to be taken away so publicly was a major thing to go through. I've got a sarcastic sense of humour so I played dumb but people misunderstood.

I was doing things to get a laugh and it bit me on the bum.

"Sometimes I'd say things that were politically incorrect and slanderous.... But I'd been thrown in at the deep end."

Kelly returned to her old job on MTV and it wasn't until she moved to LA with actor Jason Statham that things picked up for her and she won parts in Smallville and The Italian Job.

Sadly, she and Jason grew apart and split up in 2004. Then she met Billy on the set of Three.

"Billy was like no one I'd ever met before," she says. "I couldn't work him out but found him fascinating. He's got that slightly insane quality. He can be on a panel and talk about world affairs. The next day he's hanging out with the ferals on the beach like a hippy.

He's opened my eyes to new people and experiences. We're very much in love."

So why no wedding date yet?

Kelly - who will be at the Mirror's Pride of Britain Awards next week - says: "I definitely want kids in the next couple of years. The wedding is so far down on the list because we're making a future for our family."

For now, she hopes Strictly and her book will show there's more to her than meets the eye.

"I've got boobs and a bum and that's all people see," she sighs.

"Yes, I had a crap time on The Big Breakfast. Yes, I was in a great relationship which unfortunately ended. Yes, I've now met a fantastic man. But that's just a tiny bit of what I'm about.

"I was determined my book wasn't going to be a misery memoir. I hope young girls can relate to me. You can be whoever you want to." Oh, and if any red-blooded males don't plan to vote for her tonight, here's an incentive...

"They want me to wear a flesh-coloured leotard with strategically placed diamante," reveals Kelly. Then she adds with a wink: "But if I get to the semifinals I promise I'll do the splits..."

Strictly Come Dancing is on tonight, BBC1, at 6.15pm and tomorrow at 6.45pm. Life Style by Kelly Brook (Orion, £18.99) is out on Thursday.

KATE'S BATTLE
EXCLUSIVE STRICTLY KATE ON HER BATTLE TO BE DANCING FIT
By Lara Gould Tv Reporter Lara.Gould@Sundaymirror.Co.Uk

Strictly Come Dancing star Kate Garraway has overcome kidney problems, endured the agony of childbirth and spent seven years getting up at the crack of dawn to host ITV breakfast show GMTV.

So the prospect of a few twisty tangos and nifty quick-steps didn't exactly leave her quaking in her dance shoes.

But since signing up for the fifth series of the BBC hit last month, Kate has found herself battered, bruised and bandaged after picking up a painful foot injury a week before her dance debut. The fierce training sessions have brought on an agonising bout of tendonitis.

"I feel like a Premiership footballer at the moment with all this attention my feet are getting," Kate jokes. "Normally my feet are lucky if they get a pedicure.

"I think this is how David Beckham must have felt when he hurt his foot before the World Cup."

The mum-of-one sat out last night's opening night competition on doctor's orders, after being advised to rest up for as long as possible.

But the breakfast beauty is determined to make it back on the dance floor with her partner Anton Du Beke in time for next week's all-girl dance off.

Kate told the Sunday Mirror: "The pain was like red hot pokers, but I didn't want to complain because everyone was suffering in training.

"I told Anton that it hurt but he told me to pull myself together. I think he feels a bit guilty about that now."

After childbirth and the nightmare of finding a tumour on her kidney, which thankfully turned out to be non malignant, Kate says most aches and pains seem a bit unimportant.

"My husband says my arm would have to be hanging off before I would say there's something wrong," she says.

But Kate realised she had to pull out of training last Thursday when the pain became unbearable and left her unable to walk.

Since then the 39-year-old star has been been undergoing painful physiotherapy and hobbling around on crutches at the home in North London she shares with husband Derek Draper, a former political adviser to Peter Mandelson, and their 18-month-old daughter Darcey.

"It's been agony. They keep poking my feet on the most painful areas then asking if it hurts," Kate says.

But plucky Kate has a message for her rivals including model Kelly Brook, Dynasty star Stephanie Beacham and Rod Stewart's wife Penny Lancaster: "Watch out girls, I'll be back. Wild horses couldn't keep me away."

She added: "We had to cancel our summer holiday so I could do the show so I need to get my money's worth.

"Derek was gutted. But he got a romantic night in a country hotel with me instead, so he didn't lose out that much... and he wants another four kids so we have to get a move on."

While Kate's determination to get up and dance might not be in any doubt, her ability to win this series of Strictly Come Dancing could be.

"I'm not one of life's ballroom dancers," she says with a giggle.

"I had dreams of amazing everyone with my moves - then I had my first lesson and I was dreadful. I realised this was a million miles away from making a fool of yourself at a wedding.

"My dance partner Anton wants to sex up my dancing. I was flailing around in training just trying to stay upright and he'd be shouting, 'Get sexy, give it some chocolate'.

"I even practised my sexy image at home. But Derek found it difficult to see past the bandages and the crutches."

So how does Kate think she'll fare against her other Strictly co-stars who include BBC sport presenter Gabby Logan, ex-EastEnder Letitia Dean and former Mis-Teeq singer Alesha Dixon?

"When we all got together for the first group rehearsal everyone was saying they had no idea what they were doing.

"That made me feel better because I thought we were all in the same boat.

"Then I looked around the room. There's 6ft-something Penny Lancaster - I don't think there's anything she couldn't do with those legs. And Stephanie Beacham might be older than the rest of us, but no one can take their eyes off her.

"And then to top it all Kelly Brook says, 'You know, I've always had a problem with my rumba'. I don't even know what a rumba is, let alone know if I've got problems with one.

"I was secretly hoping Gabby Logan would be as bad as me.

"She's a mum of twins, so I hoped she'd be as knackered as me. And she's a TV presenter so I know she's not running around all the time. I thought we'd bond over being useless.

"Then I see her wrapping her leg over her head and find out she used to be a professional gymnast. Damn and blast."

To make matters worse, Kate is also feeling the pressure at home. Husband Derek, 40, dipped his toes into the world of ballroom dance two years ago.

Derek - who has retrained as a psychotherapist - roped Strictly Come Dancing's Brendan Cole into giving him secret dance lessons before tying the knot with Kate two years ago

"When we got on the dance floor Derek starts trying to spin me around. I thought, 'What are you doing, you madman.'

"Brendan told me later Derek was the worst person he'd ever taught to dance, and that he hoped I had all the talent in the marriage or we'd be in trouble."

Like the rest of us, Brendan, you'll have to wait until next Saturday to find out...

Strictly Come Dancing's results show is on BBC1 tonight at 6.45pm.

KELLY BROOK QUIT THREAT
EXCLUSIVE BROOK THREATENS TO QUIT 'STRICTLY' AFTER ROWS WITH BRENDAN
By Lara Gould Tv Reporter Lara.Gould@Sundaymirror.Co.Uk

Kelly Brook threatened to quit Strictly Come Dancing after furious rows with her dance partner Brendan Cole.

The actress stormed out of rehearsals on Thursday after a bust-up over Brendan's gruelling training.

And a week earlier, the pressure became so great that she announced she was quitting altogether, saying: "F*** this, I'm off to Barbados."

But Brendan, the BBC and Kelly's management managed to talk her round and she agreed to persevere.

A source on the BBC1 show said: "Brendan realises he's been pushing her too hard and said sorry, but he really wants to win the show." Tensions between Kelly, 27, and Brendan, 31, have been brewing for weeks. They came to a head when they met in London on Thursday for rehearsals for last night's live episode of the show.

Within hours Kelly, who is engaged to Titanic star Billy Zane, walked angrily out of the studio and told her driver to take her home.

A source said: "Brendan was trying to teach her a more adventurous move.

"He was trying to hammer it into her but it wasn't working. Kelly was upset and walked straight out of the building and into her car.

"Brendan accepts that sometimes he pushes too hard but he thinks he and Kelly stand such a good chance of winning that he pushes her."

A week earlier Kelly almost quit the show.

"Kelly started to regret signing up to Strictly," said the source. "She said it was all too much and she wanted to go away and take a break. She was really upset and said she was going to fly off to Barbados. It was serious enough for her management to get involved."

Brendan won the first series of the BBC dance-off with newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky, but he has failed to repeat that success with his last three partners, ex-Casualty star Sarah Manners, GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips and former Bad Girls actress Claire King.

Last year Claire branded him "arrogant" and admitted they often rowed during training.

Even Natasha, who had an affair with Brendan during their time on the show together, admitted he could be difficult to work with.
