Strictly stressed out

As if the strain of performing for the hard-to-please Arlene Phillips and Bruno Tonioli wasn't bad enough, the Strictly Come Dancing contestants now face increasing pressure from a new set of critics - the Great British Public.

And we're proving the harshest judges of all. This has been one of the most explosive weeks in Strictly's history and the tension has pushed many of the contestants to breaking point.

As our exclusive backstage pictures show, the already-anxious celebrities are cracking under the strain as they desperately fight to stay in the most talked-about show on the box.

Gabby Logan's controversial exit last weekend has left many racked with self-doubt. Despite finishing with a respectable 30 points, Gabby - who was favourite to win - seemingly failed to endear herself to the viewers. She and Penny Lancaster ended up in the dance-off.

The judges opted to save Rod Stewart's missus by a majority of three to one, leaving Gabby moaning: "I'm gutted. I had hoped my journey might last a few weeks more... nobody is safe in this game."

The result caused such a rumpus because the likes of GMTV presenter Kate Garraway and rugby player Kenny Logan, Gabby's other half, who have struggled to get to grips with the fancy footwork, remained to dance another week.

It suddenly dawned on everyone just how unpredictable the public vote can be, and that even a sparkling performance on the dance floor may not be enough to save them from the chop.

This realisation that the public are not judging them on their dancing alone has come as a terrible shock.

A show insider reveals: "This has undoubtedly been the toughest week of the series so far. Nobody expected Gabby to go. No one could have predicted that she and Penny would have been in the bottom two. It was a massive shock - there have been more than just a few nerves jangling since then." Even Alesha Dixon - a favourite with the bookies and judges alike from day one - is now doubting her ability. The former Mis Teeq singer is determined to nail the foxtrot but is terrified that she's out of her depth. And she's persuaded herself that she and partner Matthew Cutler could find themselves fighting for survival this week.

Alesha says: "I'm convinced someone has put a voodoo spell on me. I'm so worried, it's totally out of my character."

And despite coming top of the leaderboard with an impressive 36 points last Saturday, light-footed Matt Di Angelo has also been suffering a crippling crisis of confidence.

His professional dance partner, Flavia Cacace, has had to turn counsellor as she and the insecure EastEnder prepare to tackle the notoriously difficult paso doble tonight.

She has told Matt: "Everyone will expect you to struggle with the paso as it's a mature dance. But you can do it, I have faith."

But Matt confesses: "I didn't have myself down as a strong dancer. It is an open competition, anyone can go."

Fellow EastEnder Letitia Dean has also got the jitters, and worries about her size compared with some of the other contestants.

Our source reveals: "She's been trying her hardest but has ended uplooking very inelegant and landed in a heap on the floor several times.

"Letitia has been laughing about it and comparing herself to a 'squashed hedgehog' and 'roadkill', but you can tell she's feeling nervous."

The tension has even sparked backstage bickering between Kelly Brook and Brendan Cole. They got into hot water last weekend for performing an illegal third lift during the American smooth - clearly Kelly has still not forgiven Brendan. And just so he knows who's in charge, she takes on the man's role in their bullfighting-inspired Latin dance tonight.

"I got my own way," says a triumphant Kelly, who insisted on no illegal lifts in their latest routine. "I had to fight hardbecause, according to Brendan, girls can't be matadors."

And poor Kate Garraway, who was slated for her excruciating samba last week, has been through the mill more than most.

She got a tough talking-to from partner Anton du Beke who has been doling out "tough love" to whipher into shape.

But aware that many Strictly fans felt she should have gone, not Gabby, Kate is terrified of letting Anton down.

Still, it wasn't all tears, tension and tantrums backstage. Penny Lancaster, who was down in the dumps after nearly being booted out, received a perfect pick-me-up from her son Alastair, who is nearly two.

He and her mum Sally surprised her at rehearsals with a bunch of flowers and a goodluck card. And when Sally asked the toddler who the best dancer was, he replied: "Mama."

Penny also received encouragement from her dance partner Ian Waite, who told her: "You can do it, I know you can do it. I want to use every inch and every ounce of the floor, and those gorgeous legs."

Will it be enough? It's Strictly must-see TV.

STRICTLY GETHIN'S BACKSTAGE SECRETS
EXCLUSIVE STRICTLY GETHIN ON WHAT REALLY GOES ON BACKSTAGE
By Lara Gould Tv Reporter Lara.Gould@Sundaymirror.Co.Uk

Forget sexy Kelly, hot legs Penny or even toned and tanned Danish beauty Camilla... it's clumsy Kate Garraway that Strictly Come Dancing star Gethin Jones lusts after.

"Kelly's very pretty in the flesh, Penny's lovely and Alesha is stunning," says the Blue Peter presenter. "My Camilla's beautiful too, but I just find Kate incredibly sexy.

"She might not be the best dancer, but she's got a very sexy way about her. I love her. She's very funny and we get on really well. And she's got a bit of a lisp which I like."

It all sounds like Gethin is a little jealous of Kate's dance partner Anton du Beke.

But that's not to say Gethin, 29, isn't fond of his dance partner Camilla Dallerup - former fiance of Strictly lothario Brendan Cole.

Sitting alongside each other the pair have an obvious spark. And they call each other by pet names - she's the Danish Dynamo and he's the Welsh Dragon.

When they pose together for a picture, Camilla jokingly asks Gethin if that's his mobile phone she can feel in his pocket.

So it's easy to see why fans are convinced the pair - dubbed Strictly's "best looking couple ever" - are enjoying a few foxtrots, off screen as well as on.

"What can I say? She's blonde and beautiful," Gethin gushes.

"My mum wants us to get together because she thinks we'd have lovely-looking kids.

"I know I'm a lucky guy. You don't often meet someone who's that beautiful with such a great personality as well. Usually it's one or the other. But Camilla's got it all.

"On the first day we met she said 'Hi I'm Camilla'. Then she put my hand on her bum and off we went to cha cha cha.

"She's been cracking the whip ever since... and that's before we've even get to training," he jokes.

Since being introduced six weeks ago, Gethin and Camilla have spent more time together than most married couples.

And it shows. They've met each other's parents, swapped pet names and even go out for dinner. "We hit it off straight away," says Camilla. "He calls me the Danswepish Dynamo and I call him the Welsh Dragon. We've got the same sense of humour but totally opposite personalities.

"Gethin is so relaxed it's scary and he thinks I'm frosty."

Gethin chips in: "It's just her Danish personality. Camilla's so blunt. Most women would say 'Do you mind if I close the window?'

"Camilla just says 'I'm cold' and that's your cue to shut the window. It took a bit of getting used to but we get on brilliantly now. We go for dinner after training and I met her mum and dad when they came over from Denmark.

"Unfortunately they don't speak English, so all I could say was 'Get in there, Gethin' because that was the only phrase Camilla had taught me."

Unfortunately there's one rather large barrier to Gethin and Camilla becoming the next Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire - Camilla's long term boyfriend, Italian financier Fabio D'Alonzo.

They have been dating for more than three years - after Camilla famously dumped ex-love Brendan over his close relationship with BBC newsgirl Natasha Kaplinsky on the first series of Strictly.

Camilla, 33, won't say which of the two men in her life she finds more attractive.

So how does Fabio feel about watching his scantily-clad girlfriend slink around the dancefloor in front of millions of viewers on another man's arm?

"Any guy knows it's not going to be easy dancing so close to another man's girlfriend for weeks at a time." says Gethin diplomatically.

"We've met and I think he understands Camilla's job.

"All I could do was say, 'Hi, I'm Geth. I have no intention of coming on to your girlfriend.'"

But even if he won't be waltzing off with Camilla, Strictly Come Dancing looks set to do wonders for his love life.

Icy judge Arlene Philips has dubbed him "gorgeous Gethin", while the usually cutting Craig Revel Horwood has been swept away by Gethin's "remarkable" physique. Hunky Gethin has been single since splitting from girlfriend of three years, Welsh pop star Linda Jones in May 2006.

The couple met when Gethin - a former semipro rugby player - was a little known TV presenter on a Welsh music channel and Linda was a singer in girl band TNT.

They were set to wed but the romance came to an end out when Gethin moved to London in January 2005 to become Blue Peter's 31st presenter.

The couple remain good friends and Linda hasn't ruled out the chance of a reconciliation.

But she has admitted that Gethin looks a lot better on the dancefloor now than he did when they were together.

She said: "When we were together he danced like David Brent from The Office. His arms and legs flew out all over the place."

But his new-found dancing skill has begun to gain him attention off as well as on the dancefloor.

"I've been followed around the aisles in the supermarket," Gethin says. "And I got three phone numbers when I went salsa dancing last week. Two women told me they admired my hip action and slipped me their phone numbers. Then I found another piece of paper in my pocket... signed Justin.

"I don't know if dancing makes you good in bed," he adds. "But I find girls who dance sexy. Wherever you go in the world rhythm is sexy. So I guess women must think it is too."

Despite enjoying the attention their good looks bring, Gethin is adamant if he and Camilla win the series it should be on talent alone.

"I'm in the best shape I've ever been in. I've lost a stone and half and I feel great. But I want to be judged on my dancing, not my looks.

"I'm doing my best in this competition. When I do anything I do my best. But I want to win on merit, not because people find me attractive."

And in a plea that will give girls everywhere hope, Gethin adds: "I'd love to carry on dancing after the show, but unless I find a partner I don't have anyone to dance with."

Gethin's verdicts

Kelly: She's very pretty. I remember her on the Big Breakfast and I really liked her on there. But she's even better looking in the flesh than she is on TV.

Penny: She towers over me in her stilettos. I feel inferior next to her. Rod makes her a packed lunch of Scotch egg and smoked salmon on Saturday and she shares it out.

Alesha: Wow, she's stunning! Then she opens her mouth and this deep laugh comes out. A laugh like that should not come out of a body like that.

Letitia: She's lovely and really down to earth. She's a brilliant dancer but, like me, I think she struggles a bit to find the confidence to dance.

Kenny: My best mate on the show and the wind-up merchant of the series. We sneak off to watch rugby matches together.

Dom: He's like an energy box. He never stops dancing. He performs on Saturday then comes into the green room and he's already practising next week's routine.

Matt: The baby of the bunch. His mum gives him a different coloured vest to wear every week. We're all very protective towards him, but I think he'll win.

John: I'm a big footie fan so it was a thrill meeting him. He talks me through his famous goals. He texted me to gloat when my team Everton lost last week.

The Beeb's Strictly Come Dancing and after last night's showdown there are more questions than answers...

Is Bruce Forsyth's autocue broken? If not, can he read?

"Why do they always laugh?" asked the old-timer following another atrocious joke. Bruce, mate - they don't.

Will Billy Zane do us all a favour and punch Brendan Cole? If not, why not?

What's up with ancient Arlene Phillips and those jerky arm movements? Is she a Thunderbirds puppet?

Who writes the four judges of the apocalypse's pathetic puns? ("Matt you are Matt-inee idol.") Why don't they fire them?

Strictly sexist: Gabby's gaffe was being in it to win it
By Katy Guest

You'd think Gabby Logan would know this after so many years as a sports presenter, but in the last week she has learned a hard lesson: nobody likes a winner, especially if she's a woman. Gabby made the schoolgirl error of entering a dance competition, the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, with the barely concealed intention of trying to win. And as any Big Brother viewer knows, there is nothing worse than having a game plan – particularly if it involves making an effort and doing some work. Really, that's cheating.

Gabby was kicked out ahead of her fellow contestant, GMTV's Kate Garraway, who is rubbish at dancing but makes up for it by having what is called a personality. Gabby says she is "heartbroken". Judge Len Goodman calls it "a terrible miscarriage of justice". Judges are said to be considering their contracts and "viewers... talking of a big switch-off".

Meanwhile, Kate Garraway continues to show how it should be done: self-deprecate, self-deprecate, and never show you care. "I don't know why people vote the way they do... She definitely wanted to go all the way and win it. But I think Gabby's a brilliant dancer." Yes, that try-hard bitch definitely deserved to go.

PEN’S LUST DANCE

LEGGY lovely Penny Lancaster is hoping her romps with Rod Stewart will help her win Strictly Come Dancing.

She has wowed judges and viewers with her passionate dancing.

And the former model says her success is down to a healthy sex life with her rock star hubby.

On last night’s show Penny, 36, sent temperatures soaring with a saucy salsa.

And she threw in a few hip moves and thrusts she says she usually only shows off in the bedroom with Rod, 62.

She also compared the raunchy routine to sex, saying they were both “hot and sweaty”.

Strictly a stud?

Step aside Brendan Cole... there's a new Strictly stud in town.

If the whispers on the dancefloor are to be believed, he's leading no fewer than three gorgeous girls astray.

First, EastEnders hunk Matt di Angelo was linked with his former Walford co-star Louisa Lytton, 18, who took part in the last series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Next, he's supposed to be doing off-screen tangos with this year's hottest babe, Alesha Dixon, 29.

And this week, the rumour mill has 20-year-old Matt stealing his sexy dance partner Flavia Cacace from her real-life beau.

The pair were snapped touching hands in a cafe this week, prompting wild speculation the 27-year-old beauty had ditched long-term boyfriend, Latino dancer Vincent Simone, to shack up with Matt.

Filming, rehearsing and juggling a trio of lovelies. Phew, where on earth does the boy find the time?

"Yeah, apparently I'm dating Louisa, Flavia and I'm having a bit of Alesha as well," grins Matt. "If I'm not over at Alesha's, I'm round at Flavia's.

And I'm in a hotel with Louisa after that. No wonder I'm exhausted!"

He's teasing of course. Despite the gossip flying round the BBC's hit show, Matt insists he's 100 per cent single.

"Sadly, it's something I can only dream about," he says of his stud status. "I've known Louisa for years and I'm getting to know Alesha and Flavia better all the time. They're the nicest, most down-to-earth, kindest girls.

"They're both stupidly attractive and if I was lucky enough to be able to choose between them, I couldn't. I'd have them both in some kind of strange menage a trois!

"I'd love to date Alesha. Of course, I would. But she's so far out of my league, it's ridiculous.

"And yes, there's a remarkable chemistry between Flavia and me - and has been from day one. I don't care who sees that, I'm not hiding it, I'm not doing anything wrong.

"When you're dancing with someone and spending all day being intimate and close, that's got to mean something. We just click.

"Her abs are something else. It's intimidating having that stomach next to my pot belly. I just want to feed her muffins and fatten her up.

"But seriously, we went for a coffee and were photographed touching each other's hands as I gave her a phone. If you take 1,000 frames across a few minutes, you're going to get a picture something close to what you're after."

So Vincent, who was said to have changed his Facebook status from "in a relationship" to "single" after splitting from Flavia over her relationship with Matt, has nothing to worry about then?

Matt says: "I was talking to Vincent last night and having a laugh about it. We find it amusing and take it with a pinch of salt.

Gethin (Jones) and Camilla (Dallerup) went for a three-course candlelit meal on the Thames the other night for a TV show. No one batted an eyelid. I can't even go to Starbucks with Flavia!"

It's not hard to see why Matt has been cast as the ladies' man in the dance show. Blue-eyed and beautiful, he's perfect pin-up material. But he squirms at the suggestion that he's a bit of a hunk.

"People ask what it's like being a sex symbol and I'm like, 'Dunno. Ask Brad Pitt!' I'm just Matt from North London. If I'm having dinner in the Ritz or standing in a kebab shop, I am what I am.

If people think I'm a heart-throb, then great. But I don't see it myself."

He does, however, get lots of fanmail from loved-up females.

"Strangest thing I got through the post was knickers, a shot-glass and a box of chocolates. All in the same package. Not sure what they were trying to say there. I'm wearing the knickers now. Joke!"

After spending weeks as one of the favourites on Strictly, Matt slipped into the bottom two last week after his Viennese Waltz.

It left him in the dance-off against Penny Lancaster-Stewart and, luckily for him, the judges threw Matt a lifeline, opting to give Rod's missus the elbow.

He says: "We never expected to be in the dance-off. I was thinking, 'Wicked! Gethin's through, Barnesy's through... and Kenny!'

"Then it was, 'Hang on a minute... there are only three left.' I'd already taken bits of my costume off, assuming I was safe. We'd got good marks from the judges.

"It was Penny versus me. I was convinced it was time to go home. So I relaxed, ended up doing the spins backwards and I improvised the ending. I was killing myself laughing as it was the worst dance I'd ever done. But it looked like I was really performing, which may have saved me."

Tonight, Matt and Flavia are doing the quickstep. He says: "I don't want to go out. Seven weeks ain't bad but I'm not ready to go yet."

He predicts it will be an allgirl final with Kelly Brook, Alesha and Kate Garraway. "Kate's not the best dancer but people can see she's lovely. And she's partnered with the hilarious Anton du Beke. He should be in black and white. He says things like, 'That's the ticket', 'oopsadaisy' and 'okey dokey'.

"Everyone is so close, so tight. Whenever I see Kenny Logan I run up to him, jump in his arms and wrap my legs round him going, 'How are you, dad?'!

There is a close bond between Matt and ex-Scotland rugby star Kenny. Matt explains: "I was about to take a bite out of a sandwich one day when Kenny shouted, 'Don't eat that!' There was a wasp inside it - I'm allergic to wasps so I could've been killed. I owe him my life."

"We get on so well and it's good to have strong, grounded people, who are in the business, around you.

"I can't phone up my mate who's a scaffolder and ask him for advice on a bit of ballroom dancing!"

It's been two years since Matt first turned up as Deano Wicks in Albert Square.

But he leaves the show in February, after screen dad Phil Daniels announced he was quitting earlier this year.

He says: "My acting wasn't brilliant in the beginning and I'd be the first to admit that. But I've progressed and grown as an actor and a person. I learned so much from EastEnders and I will never say anything derogatory about it.

"Everything happens for a reason - and two years is a long time for any actor to be in the same job. I'm a jobbing actor again. I've got a few things lined up for next year and I'm excited about going for auditions again."

You won't see any pictures of Matt falling down drunk outside of nightclubs - he's learned to be careful about where he goes.

He says: "You're young and naive and suddenly you have all this fame. I went out to those celebrity-type clubs a few times before realising I had to make a choice. I chose to focus on my career.

"You get these dizzy birds saying they slept with you and then the papers sometimes print that. It's just a form of prostitution and these girls are the lowest of the low.""

Matt moved out into his own flat this year but he admits that he still takes his laundry home to his mum.

"My mum's great," he says. "Sometimes I'm just too busy to do my washing!

"The other day, she offered to come round and do my washingup. It was tempting and I very nearly took her up on it."

Matt pauses and there's a mischievous glint in his eye as he adds: "But Alesha wanted a lie-in..."
