Where Is The Snow?
Monday March 19, 2007
Freezing winds from the Arctic have seen temperatures plummet across Britain - but the predicted blanket of snow has failed to materialise.
Gritters were out in force overnight in preparation for icy conditions and there has been some snow particularly on high ground in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
But much of it has failed to settle and there has been little disruption to road or rail services.
Sky News weather presenter Denise Nurse said: "There have been some snow showers, but things aren't too bad.
"I've always said March is an unpredictable month."
Temperatures today will range from a high of 8C (46F) in the south of England to 1C (34F) on the north west coast of Scotland.
It is expected to once again dip below freezing across much of Britain tonight.
Environmentalists have expressed relief that the weather is not as bad as predicted.
There had been fears that many animals that had come out of hibernation early because of the mild winter might struggle to find food if the ground was frozen.
After Wednesday, temperatures will rise slightly back to average levels for this time of year, but the forecaster warned that warm weather is some time off.
The last big snowfalls to hit Britain were last month, when they caused widespread travel disruption and left thousands of people stranded in South Wales and the borders.
