Sugababes New member unvailed.

Girl group Sugababes have unveiled their new member just a day after Mutya Buena announced she was leaving.
Self-confessed Sugababes fan Amelle Berrabah, 21, from Hampshire, UK, is the new singer in the group.

"For years I've dreamt of breaking into the music business but never did I dream of waking up one day to be the third Sugababe," she said.

Buena said she left because she wanted a break from promoting the band's album Taller in More Ways.

The new member of the band was chosen by the group's management, according to the Sugababes' website.

Keisha Buchanan and Heidi Range have given their backing to the new singer.

Range said: "Our management introduced us to Amelle as someone they knew with an amazing voice, who looked great and, just as important, was already a big fan of the band.

"When we all met her, we instantly knew she was the only person to share the rest of the journey with us."

The British band formed seven years ago and has gone through three different line-ups in that time, with only Buchanan left as a founding member.

They have enjoyed four number one singles in the UK - Round Round, Push the Button, Freak Like Me and Hole in the Head - and were named best British dance act at the Brits in 2003

Stars Pack Elton's 'Wedding' Reception

Ringo Starr and Victoria Beckham were among the stars who celebrated at Sir Elton John and David Furnish's civil partnership party.
Liz Hurley, Cilla Black and Lulu were some of those in a celebrity traffic jam outside the lavish party at the couple's Old Windsor mansion.

Sir Elton, 58, earlier "wed" Mr Furnish, 43, at Windsor Guildhall.

Crowds had gathered for their ceremony, which came on the first day of same-sex unions in England and Wales.

Paparazzi and locals were treated to a good view of celebrities as they arrived at the party.

Their cars had to queue through country lanes near the couple's home.

Sitting in the back of a Rolls Royce, Beckham cradled a parcel in silver packaging and chatted to a friend.

Fashion house head Donatella Versace and model Claudia Schiffer were also among the guests.

England cricket captain Michael Vaughan and tennis star Greg Rusedski were there from the world of sport.

Colleagues from the music industry, singers James Blunt and Jamie Cullum were also in the queue.

Entertainer Lulu pointed at the traffic and said: "This could only happen for Elton."

Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne were among the party guests

Sir Elton and Mr Furnish were among 700 gay couples joining in a civil partnership on Wednesday.

Similar ceremonies took place first in Northern Ireland on Monday, then in Scotland on Tuesday.

The couples are granted new rights in areas such as employment, pension and inheritance. But the partnerships are not officially regarded as marriages under UK law.

A small number of guests attended Sir Elton's ceremony, including the British video artist Sam Taylor-Wood.

Ms Taylor-Wood - who arrived with husband Jay Jopling, owner of the White Cube Gallery in London - entered the Guildhall with Arthur, Mr Furnish's black-and-white dog, on a lead.

After the ceremony, the happy couple were showered with rice on the steps of the Guildhall. Two young women managed to break through the police cordon to present them with an apple ice-cream cake.

Asked how it went, Sir Elton said: "Great, thanks."

"It was a very emotional service," Ms Taylor-Wood told the BBC News website.

Lulu was one of the many stars who got caught up in the queue

"Everyone clapped, and of course they kissed at the end," added Mr Jopling.

Actor Sir Antony Sher was also celebrating after he and his long-term partner, theatre director Greg Doran, had their own civil partnership ceremony at Islington Town Hall in north London.

"It's wonderful," Sir Antony said. "It's a little bit of history being made.

"I feel very proud this is happening in this country and that we can be part of the very first group to have it done.

"It means an enormous amount to be legal together after 18 and a half years."

Judge Annul's Zellwegers marriage

Bridget Jones actress Renee Zellweger's brief marriage to country singer Kenny Chesney has been reportedly annulled by the Los Angeles Superior Court.
According to papers obtained by US TV show Extra, "the judgement of nullity is entered... the parties are declared to be single persons".

In US law, an annulment decrees that a marriage was invalid from its outset.

The judicial declaration comes seven months after their surprise wedding on the Caribbean island of St John.

The pair first met at the Concert of Hope tsunami relief benefit in January and married in May.

But the marriage ended four months later when the couple sought an annulment, with Zellweger listing "fraud" as the reason for the break-up.

In a statement released on 16 September, the actress said the term 'fraud' was "simply legal language and not a reflection of Kenny's character".

The same day the pair released a joint statement saying "the miscommunication of the objective of their marriage" was the only reason for their separation

Shayne on track for xmas no1

The X Factor winner Shayne Ward is heading for the Christmas number one spot after opening day sales passed the 313,000 mark.
By comparison last year's Christmas winner Band Aid sold 72,000 copies on day one.

Ward beat thousands of hopefuls to win the ITV talent show on Saturday.

But his single failed to take the record for the fastest-selling single of all time. That record is held by Sir Elton John for Candle in the Wind.

The song, which was released following the death of Diana Princess of Wales in 1997, sold more than 685,000 copies in one day.

Ward also failed to match the achievements of fellow talent show winner Will Young, who won Pop Idol in 2002.

His debut single, Evergreen, sold more than 400,000 copies on day one.

Ward's rivals for the coveted number one spot include Westlife featuring soul legend Diana Ross and The JCB song by folk unknowns Nizlopi.

But he is virtually certain of the top spot after selling 250,000 singles over the counter and the rest as downloads.

Gennaro Castaldo of retailer HMV said: "Day one sales of Shayne Ward's That's My Goal at HMV stores and other retailers are truly astounding and nothing short of incredible."

The Christmas chart will be revealed on Sunday.

William Hill has closed the book on the Christmas number one with Shayne's odds at 100/1 on.

Spokesman Rupert Adams said: "Even the biggest bands can't take on the X Factor winner. "This is our worst results on Christmas number one ever. We just have to hope it doesn't snow on Christmas Day to add to our woes."

Police Investigate Moss 'Cocaine Video'

Police are looking at the infamous video of Kate Moss allegedly snorting cocaine.

The supermodel was secretly filmed at a studio in Chiswick, west London, in September during a recording session by on-off boyfriend Pete Doherty's band Babyshambles.

Moss, who is currently in the US, will find out the results of the police investigation next year after officers have consulted the Crown Prosecution Service.

It is thought likely that if she admits taking the drug, she will receive a caution.

The Metropolitan Police have a policy of pursuing drug dealers rather than users and detectives are also using the video to try to establish who supplied the drugs.

The Croydon-born model's professional life has been given a recent boost after she lost a number of lucrative contracts in the wake of her drugs controversy.

Moss unveils a clean-cut image when she is filmed making tea and relaxing at home in a TV ad for Virgin Mobile.

The 31-year-old pokes fun at herself in a "rare" speaking role.

She dons a beige, baggy, V-neck jumper, the minimum of make-up and grey micro shorts for the ad, filmed last weekend in the US.

Moss filmed the ad after spending a month in an Arizona rehab clinic following the drugs controversy.

Britney Spears and husband Kevin Federline are certainly living up to the title of their reality TV show Britney And Kevin: Chaotic.

Their attempt to get their marriage back on track following the singer reportedly kicking Kev to the kerb isn't going at all smoothly. The couple had a blazing row in a cinema in front of hundreds of people.

They were spotted arguing after watching the new film Memoirs Of A Geisha. A source told the New York Post: "Kev spent the whole time on the phone. Then they had a fight when he tried to leave early."

He doesn't seem to be doing himself any favours that man.

Doherty- i'll love kate forever

Singer Pete Doherty says his life revolves around crack cocaine and heroin - and that his drug-taking cost him his relationship with Kate Moss.

The troubled Babyshambles star now plans to become known for his musical talents rather than his drug habit and says although he has split from the supermodel he will always love her.

Speaking of his hopes for their relationship, he said: "I'll love her forever, but whilst I think I'm in any way connected to crack or heroin or if my life revolves in any way around those drugs, then I can't be in her life. It's as simple as that."

Doherty revealed Moss had dumped him when he walked out of rehab after just nine days - and hurled back the ring he had bought her.

The singer still carries it around with him in the hope they will be reunited.

"I was nearly blinded when she threw that ring back at me. But I kept it in its little box," he said. "If I bump into her again and there isn't a crack pipe in my jacket..."

Doherty has also vowed to become "George Best in reverse" by beating his addictions.

In an interview with BBC2's Newsnight, interviewer Kirsty Wark compared him to Best, whose footballing genius was eclipsed by his addiction to alcohol.

Doherty, 26, said: "Yeah, I'm going to have to do that in reverse. Hopefully I'm going to do it by having people hear my music."

He explained: "George Best became very famous for his football, right, his genius on the pitch, and then was swamped in what I call dead-monkey-brain-tabloid fever. Whereas for me, it's going to be the other way round."

Rod's baby scare

Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster have spoken about how their first child together was born with the umbilical cord dangerously wrapped twice around his neck.

Lancaster, 34, was in a candle-lit bathing pool when doctors discovered that the unborn baby's heart rate had dropped.

Stewart, 60, told Hello! magazine: "Without wanting to worry Penny, they told us, 'We have to get this baby out as soon as possible'.

"We were trying to get Penny out of the pool but she was so tired and weak that she was falling asleep. Then once we had her on the floor, squatting, it was all very quick."

The rocker said: "I was massaging her back and after 10 minutes she let out this primal scream. I've never heard anything like it."

Doctors managed to get the umbilical cord off Alastair Wallace's neck in seconds.

Stewart, who has five other children, joked: "It was so skilful to watch, but I doubt he'll ever wear a turtle neck again."

When Lancaster's waters broke, she remembered that she had wanted a plaster cast of her pregnant stomach, and went to an artist's house instead of the hospital as advised.

"When we got there, the lady asked me when the baby was due and Rod and I were looking at each other, thinking we'd better not tell her the waters had already broken," she said.

After the birth, she asked doctors to collect the blood from the umbilical cord so they could freeze it for stem cell research.

The pair joked to hospital staff that they would see them next year - to give birth to a second child.

Stewart proposed to his long-term girlfriend in March this year at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the couple are set to marry in the south of France

Cruise 'irritates most' say fans

Cruise starred in War of the Worlds and The Last Samurai
Tom Cruise has been named the biggest movie star of all time, but also the most irritating, by film fans.
An Empire magazine poll of 10,000 movie fans named Cruise the biggest star, beating Robert De Niro and Marilyn Monroe among others.

Kate Winslet and Kevin Spacey took the favourite actress and actor titles.

Cruise's status as most irritating actor "may be a knee-jerk reaction to his year in the spotlight", said Empire assistant editor Ian Freer.

Scientology beliefs

While promoting latest film War of the Worlds earlier this year, Cruise announced he was engaged to Dawson's Creek star Katie Holmes. The pair are now expecting a baby.

Cruise also spoke of his belief in Scientology and criticised actress Brooke Shields, who had admitted taking drugs for post-natal depression.

He beat Jennifer Lopez, Julia Roberts, Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey in the most irritating actor category.

BIGGEST MOVIE STARS OF ALL TIME

1. Tom Cruise
2. Robert De Niro
3. Harrison Ford
4. Al Pacino
5. Marilyn Monroe
Source: Empire magazine
But Mr Freer added: "He has also been voted the greatest movie star in the world, something this year's Mission: Impossible 3 will no doubt confirm."

The poll was commissioned to mark Empire magazine's 200th issue.

In the acting categories Finding Neverland star Winslet beat Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman while American Beauty star Spacey beat Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp among others.

Steven Spielberg was best director, beating King Kong film-maker Peter Jackson - nevertheless Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy was named favourite film franchise.

Film fans named Fargo star Steve Buscemi their favourite unsung movie hero.

Seven out of 10 of those questioned thought there was too much product placement in films, while 81% thought there were too many sequels and remakes

Lost stars in drink-drive hearing

Rodriguez, 27, appeared in the film The Fast and the Furious
Two actresses from US TV drama Lost have appeared in court in Hawaii to face separate drink-driving charges.
Michelle Rodriguez - Ana Lucia in the series - and Cynthia Watros were stopped on the same Hawaii road within minutes of each other on 1 December.

Ms Watros' lawyer told Kaneohe District court on Thursday that Ms Watros, who plays Libby, will plead guilty to drunk driving at a hearing on 12 January.

Ms Rodriguez, star of The Fast and the Furious, will face trial on 30 March.

Traffic offences

Police said both women failed on-the-spot sobriety tests after their vehicles were seen moving erratically in Kailua.

They were later released on $500 (£290) bail each.

Ms Watros' lawyer, Lanson Kupau, told the court that Ms Watros, who was not present, will take "full responsibility" at the hearing next month.

Watros, 37, will plead guilty next month, her lawyer said

In an interview, he said: "She made a mistake. She's very remorseful and she wants to take responsibility for her actions

"She realizes, understands and appreciates the seriousness of the charges. We will cooperate and she will take responsibility."

Ms Rodriguez' lawyer Steve Barta had no comment following the hearing.

Last week, prosecutors in California filed a motion in Los Angeles Superior Court to revoke Ms Rodriguez's probation because of her drink-driving arrest in Hawaii.

In June 2004 she pleaded no contest to three traffic offences: hit and run, drink-driving and driving with a suspended license, in Los Angeles.

Ms Rodriguez' is serving a three-year probation term after completing a three-month alcohol programme.

Prosecutors in Los Angeles will ask the court on 24 January to schedule a probation violation hearing.

The final episode of Family Affairs is being broadcast on Five, as fictional suburb Charnham disappears after more than eight years of drama.
The channel axed its five-day-a-week soap in August in order to invest its £10m budget in new primetime drama and comedy.

But had the soap's "natural lifespan" come to an end, as Five's director of programmes Dan Chambers stated?

Family Affairs was the first show broadcast on Five when it launched in March 1997, based around the middle class Hart family living somewhere in Maidenhead.

Loyal viewers

A ratings-chasing revamp saw most of that family perish in a boat accident before Charnham was relocated to west London.

Soon the villainy of pub landlord Pete Callan (played by David Easter), the relationship trauma of Yasmin Green (Ebony Thomas) and the gossip of Sadie Hargreaves Lloyd (Barbara Young) took centre stage.

Compared to rival soaps the show's ratings remained low but consistent, attracting about one million viewers per episode.

Long-term characters such as villain Pete Callan helped retain viewers
"Out of all the soaps, viewers remained incredibly loyal to Family Affairs," says Dominic Treadwell-Collins, who worked as story producer on the show.

"They related to the characters and cared a great deal about them."

Young, who played Sadie for nearly seven years, agrees.

"I still get stopped in the street and lifted off my feet by very large ladies," she says.

"I suppose they saw Sadie as this lovable auntie figure. She was nosey, but nice with it."

The pace of production at Family Affairs - which shared its studio in Merton, south London, with police drama The Bill - was frenetic.

"I was filming in Sheffield when I found out I had the part," says Young.

Barbara Young, who played Sadie Hargreaves Lloyd
"I was driven down to London that night, had my hair dyed bright red at 10am the next morning and was on set that afternoon."

Ex-Family Affairs producer Johann Knobel says writers used the show's format of five weekly episodes to create longer "slow-burning" storylines.

"As the show was 'under the radar' in many respects, we did not feel we were driven by ratings," Mr Knobel says.

"This enabled us to take more risks with stories, developing plots with more depth and interest."

He cites a storyline in which Karen Webb, played by Tanya Franks, fell in love with the surrogate mother of her baby.

"We told that story in a mature way, looking at issues of sexuality without making them sensational," he says.

Extra competition

Mr Knobel says he was adamant that Family Affairs characters would never be changed merely to serve a twist in the plot.

"This gave characters an integrity that viewers could believe in," he says.

A Family Affairs storyline, in which a couple learned that a family friend had abused their daughter, earned the show two British Soap Awards in May.

But since 1997, rival soaps EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale added extra weekly episodes and all terrestrial TV shows faced increased multi-channel competition.

Karen Webb (left) fell in love with the surrogate mother of her baby
The cancellation of the revived Crossroads, ITV's Night and Day and Channel 4's long-running Brookside in 2003 confirmed that soap opera longevity was no longer assured.

"With the awards under our belt we thought Family Affairs would be extended for longer than the usual year," says Mr Treadwell-Collins. "Instead it was axed."

Now a series story editor on EastEnders, he is convinced the soap would have thrived on another channel.

"There is a stigma attached to Five - some viewers still think it just shows boobs and Keith Chegwin," he says.

"We also wanted the channel to publicise Family Affairs more."

Now a producer on Holby City, Mr Knobel said Five's investment in the soap was "a huge amount of money" for the channel. "It was purely an economic decision to cancel it."

The final episode will see the entire cast assemble on Stanley Street for a final time, with a few potential surprises.

"We did not tie everything up, so some characters can have a life outside Charnham," says Mr Treadwell-Collins.

"Family Affairs was a warm show so we wanted to give it a positive send-off."

Five broadcasts the final episode of Family Affairs on 30 December

Arrests made in J-Lo video case

Lopez and Anthony wed in a private ceremony last year
Two men have been arrested in New York for attempting to sell Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony's wedding video back to the couple for $1m (£580,000).
Tito Moses and Steven Wortman allegedly attempted to ransom the video after trying to sell it to US media outlets.

A copy of the couple's wedding video was in a laptop computer stolen from Mr Anthony's car in New Jersey in October.

The pair have been arraigned on charges of conspiracy, attempted grand theft and possession of stolen property.

According to a criminal complaint filed against them, Mr Moses, 31, and Mr Wortman, 49, unsuccessfully tried to sell the video to media outlets including People magazine, Us Weekly and the Access Hollywood TV show before approaching Mr Anthony's production company.

A New York police detective, posing as an associate of Mr Anthony, engaged in a series of negotiations between 20 and 27 December before the pair were arrested.

Mr Anthony and Ms Lopez were married in June 2004 in a ceremony at her Los Angeles home.
