Scientists in Parkinson's disease cure breakthrough By Mike Swain, Science Editor Experts believe a cure for Parkinson's could be close after a cloning experiment helped lab mice with the disease. Stem cells from the mice were grown in an embryo by US scientists and turned into neurons missing when the crippling disease strikes. Mice that received neurons from their own cloned cells showed clear improvement, a report in the journal Nature. Using them on other mice did not help. Dr Kieran Breen, of the Parkinson's Disease Society, said: "Stem cell therapy offers great hope for repairing the brain in people with Parkinson's. It may ultimately offer a cure." Mirror |
