BBC iPlayer allows viewers to rewind live TV The launch of the Live Restart service means viewers can rewind live programmes without waiting for them to end Written By Susanna Lazarus Radiotimes Imagine this: you’re an EastEnders addict, appalled to hear the famous “duff duffs” at the end of last night’s episode - desperate to learn the outcome of *insert scandalous Walford cliffhanger. You’re stuck on the train home, watching the minutes painfully tick by, huffing and puffing at your fellow passengers. You’re going to miss the start of the next episode... Fear not, you can breathe a deep sigh of relief as BBC iPlayer launches Live Restart – a service that enables audiences to rewind and restart live TV on iPlayer without having to wait for the programme to end. The launch means viewers will never miss a moment of their favourite programmes, even if they’re 5 minutes late for the start. According to Dave Price, head of BBC iPlayer: “Live Restart gives audiences control. With one simple click of a button viewers can skip back to the beginning of a live programme, ensuring they never miss a moment of their favourite BBC programmes”. In addition to live broadcasts, users will be able to scroll back to any item shown during the previous two hours, so if you’ve spent the last 90 minutes engaged in battle with public transport, you can still sit down to your favourite programme straight away. The move by the Beeb reflects the increasing demand for live programmes on catch-up services: live requests made up over 22% of BBC iPlayer requests from PCs in April 2012. The Live Restart feature will hope to build on the success that BBC iPlayer is currently enjoying. In a report published by BBC iStats, the online service listed an average of 190 million programme requests per month in the past year – 140 million for TV, 46 million for radio – with average daily requests standing at 5.4 million in May 2012. The most-requested TV episodes last month included those from recent series of The Apprentice, The Voice and Russell Howard’s Good News, with Episodes, Planet Earth Live and Silk also featuring in the top ten. On radio, the Premier League’s nail-biting finale between Manchester City and QPR drew in the highest audiences on iPlayer. Live Restart is currently only available on PCs, but will be launched on mobiles, tablets and internet TVs later this year. |
