EXTRAS funnyman Stephen Merchant has had the last laugh — beating show creator Ricky Gervais to a top gong.
Stephen was last night named best comedy actor ahead of Ricky.
Judges at the British Comedy Awards in London paid tribute to his performance as the useless agent of Ricky’s wannabe actor in Extras.
His famous co-star was in New York, but sent a jokey video message.
Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen was handed the Ronnie Barker Award by pop queen Madonna who praised him as “brilliant, daring and controversial”.
Earlier ceremony host Jonathan Ross clashed with Madonna when he quipped: “What a year it’s been for you — a new album and a new black baby.” Madonna replied: “I’ll give you two black eyes!”
Newcomer gongs went to Charlotte Church and
randy Russell Brand, who cuddled guest Courtney Love.
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host Chris Tarrant — recovering from his marriage split — dedicated his special entertainment gong to his kids, adding: “I will always be your daddy.”
