‘I'M TOO FAMOUS TO HAVE A BRAZILIAN’
Presenter Davina McCall on beauty products, botox, and being too famous to have embarrassing treatments…
How do you look after your skin?
I use a face wash in the shower, and my moisturiser is called ÜberSassy Celebrity Face, which I thought was quite funny. At the moment I’m not that worried about my looks. I’m 40 and I think I look alright, and my husband, Matthew, still fancies me, so it’s all good.
What’s the secret to your fabulous hair?
I colour it with Garnier Nutrisse Cream, and the shade is Macadamia Golden Brown. The trick is to just go a couple of shades lighter or darker than your natural colour, then you can’t go wrong.
What’s in your make-up bag?
Lancôme Definicils Mascara. It’s got to be waterproof, because I spend my whole life crying, mostly with joy at the moment. I’m very emotional. Any film sets me off – I cried at Charlotte’s Web and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s tragic.
What’s your best beauty bargain?
My son Chester, who’s one, has eczema, so through him I’ve found Aveeno’s oatmeal moisturiser. It’s cheap and the whole family can use it – me, my daughters Holly, six, and Tilly, four, and Chester. If I’m running around and need to moisturise my legs or something, I just grab that.
What’s your biggest luxury?
I just bought some Wolford tights. They are so good, but try explaining that to my husband. He saw the receipt, and I had to say, ‘Noooo, you don’t understand, they’re Wolford.’ And he was like, ‘It’s a pair of tights.’ And for beauty I love Jo Malone. The box. The bag. It’s so beautiful. It’s the same sort of ‘ooh, aah’ factor you get with a Tiffany box. Except it’s cheaper than Tiffany. Bargain!
What makes you buy a product?
I’m very much word of mouth, so if a girlfriend recommends something, I’ll buy it. And I go for packaging. I love Benefit High Beam. And all Benefit packaging. I’m a bit of a tart really.
Which celebrity would you most like to swap looks with?
Christy Turlington is what I’d call a total natural beauty. She has the most awesome, full mouth. I don’t have a very full mouth. And she has big doe eyes – I just think she’s really beautiful. But there’s truth in the saying beauty comes from within, and I get the impression she’s a really nice person. I’ve heard she’s a good soul and I think that shows.
How has your body changed as you’ve got older?
I remember my first bit of cellulite – five days after my 25th birthday. I phoned my girlfriend and was like, ‘No! I’ve got cellulite!’ She said, ‘Did you know, up to 25 your body’s regenerating. From 25 onwards it starts degenerating.’ I thought, ‘I’ve only been alive 25 years, I’ve got another 50 to go, how can I be degenerating?’
Have you ever had any embarrassing treatments?
I haven’t, but I’d love to have colonic irrigation. I just can’t bring myself to have one. People say it’s amazing, but I can’t flush water up my bottom. I just can’t. The idea of someone doing it and watching stuff come out. It’s the same reason I’d never have a Brazilian wax. Oh God, the shame. Any kind of personal thing is much worse when you’re famous. You imagine people going home and saying, ‘Oooh, you’ll never guess who I had in today…’
When have you felt most beautiful?
When I’m ovulating. Or if that’s not what you meant, my wedding. I like to think I was quite relaxed about it. It was quite small, no magazines involved. I did my own hair and make-up in about 15 minutes.
Would you have botox?
Not yet. Matthew is deeply anti plastic surgery. Plus, I’m an addict and I know if I started having botox, I’d be the Bride of Wildenstein within a year.
Tell us your worst beauty disaster.
I shaved a nick in my eyebrow once and I looked like I’d been in an accident. I was trying to look a bit Ray Petri from The Face.
What’s your New Year’s Resolution?
I’m going to have another tattoo to cover up the chillies on my shoulder. People keep thinking they’re carrots, which is pretty uncool.
