Quite the reverse.
Mikey went off on one and then brought up the Imogen comment he and Glyn thought they heard.
Why would Richard, who was at that point, feeling embarrassed and guilty about the booze-hiding, bring up the Imogen comment?
They brought it up, not Richard. And therefore, he's entitled to clarify what he actually said, and furthermore be truthful about what he thinks of Imogen.
He wasn't hypocritical and he wasn't a coward.
