Big Brother’s extreme ways have had you reaching for the remote in the past, you could be in for a shock when this year’s show kicks off in May. Why? Because Channel 4 bosses may have gone too far this time as they are reportedly signing up a contestant who has Tourette’s Syndrome for the reality TV marathon.

According to the Daily Star, the mystery man, who is in his early twenties, has been waived through to the final stages of the audition process. “He’s now a favourite and if he gets in it will make the show a lot more interesting,” says a source. “It will cause a lot of headaches for the producers because they could have a lot of editing to do to cut the bad language out.”

The hereditary condition is defined by “persistent motor and vocal tics and frequently associated with obsessions, compulsions, and attentional difficulties”. Some feel that by inviting someone with Tourette's Syndrome on to the show, the producers have gone too far as it looks like they are exploiting someone with an illness for entertainment.

One word: exploitation.

Saying that though, I do laugh at the guy in Shameless!

Big brother will not send him in. This is a leak and once there is a leak they just use the standbye contestents. Why do you think they send all housemates to a different country for two weeks prior to entering the BB house so that they remain anonymous!

What is Tourette Syndrome?
FAQ

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterized by tics -- involuntary, rapid, sudden movements or vocalizations that occur repeatedly in the same way. Diagnostic criteria include:

* Both multiple motor and one or more vocal tics present at some time, although not necessarily simultaneously;

*The occurrence of tics many times a day (usually in bouts) nearly every day or intermittently throughout the span of more than one year;

* Periodic changes in the number, frequency, type and location of the tics, and in the waxing and waning of their severity. Symptoms can sometimes disappear for weeks or months at a time;

*Onset before the age of 18.

NOTE:

* Although the word "involuntary" is used to describe the nature of the tics, this is not entirely accurate. It would not be true to say that people with TS have absolutely no control over their tics, as though it was some type of spasm; rather, a more appropriate term would be "compelling." People with TS feel an irresistable urge to perform their tics, much like the need to scratch a mosquito bite. Some people with TS are able to hold back their tics for up to hours at a time, but this only leads to a stronger outburst of tics once they are finally allowed to be expressed.

*Although the DSM-IV has recently changed the upper age of onset from 21 down to 18, the Tourette Syndrome Association Medical Advisory Board is working to have it reverted back to 21, as is listed in the DSM-III-R.

* Coprolalia (see below) does not have to be exclusively swear words. Many times coprolalia manifests itself as socially inappropriate or unacceptable words or phrases, such as the overwhelming urge to use a racial epithet, even though that is the last thing you want to do. Something about the "forbiddenness" of it impells a person with coprolalia to say it, seemingly against their will.

*Another important thing to remember about coprolalia is that although this symptom has been sensationalized by the media, it is actually rare, occuring in less than 30% of people who have a severe case.

How are tics classified?
Simple tics are movements or vocalizations which are completely meaningless, whereas complex tics are movements or vocalizations which make use of more than one muscle group or apear to be meaningful.

The range of tics or tic-like symptoms that can be seen in TS is very broad. The complexity of some symptoms is often perplexing to family members, friends, teachers and employers who may find it hard to believe that the actions or vocal utterances are not deliberate.

For a list of symptoms organized in their respective categories, please click here.

What causes Tourette Syndrome?
Research is ongoing, but it is believed that an abnormal metabolism of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin are involved with the disorder. It is genetically transmitted; parents having a 50% chance of passing the gene on to their children. Girls with the gene have a 70% chance of displaying symptoms, boys with the gene have a 99% chance of displaying symptoms.

Are there related problems?
Yes. People with TS are more likely to have any combination of the following problems:

* Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

*Difficulties with Impulse Control (disinhibition)

* Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

*Various Learning Disabilities (such as dyslexia)

* Various Sleep Disorders

Back once again to the DSM-IV, Tourette Syndrome is an Axis I disorder. People with TS do tend to present with more other Axis I disorders than the rest of the general population.

Swiftly sidestepping Christine's freshly opened can of worms... the number of voices saying that BB is overdue for a disabled (or whatever the PC term is these days) housemate has been rising, and choosing someone who can still do physical tasks would make it logistically simpler, so I think this might be a possibility. The description of tourettes as not necessarily including coprolalia only serves to reinforce the idea, since BB could be seen to be dispelling this myth by putting someone with tics but not corprolalia in the house.

I'm not sure that the 'somebody mentioned him on the web so he's not going in' theory holds water - if only because the people over on DSBB who have got through the audition process thus far have not been posting detailed descriptions of the others in order to improve their chances ;)

as for:
* Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
* Difficulties with Impulse Control (disinhibition)
* Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
* Various Learning Disabilities (such as dyslexia)
* Various Sleep Disorders

I'm not naming any names, but I'll admit that I was thinking of several past housemates as I read that :D

Well, I've said it a thousand times...and one more time...

all BB contestants are by definition somewhat nuts. They are all aware of the vilification the media will inflict on them, and all the digging the media hacks will be doing on their entire life history.

Only someone who is somewhat crazy would ever put themselve in front of the UKs viewing public.

Calrissian: will not be on BB7...has 'other things' to deal with.

Weve had these rumours before but they are never true. Remember the mother and daughter, twins and nun rumours?

But if it is true, they wont be able to show much live coverage.

As for ALL housemates being 'somewhat nuts'- I think thats harsh. Maybe in recent years that would be true, but BB1, and BB2 contestants can be defended. Dean, Helen, Paul, Craig even Brian are normal people you would like to know.

Now Nadia, Makosi, Sam and Lesley are terrible little tinkers. There is a theme there- they are all from BB6- the worst series ever.
