No smoke without fire

MegaStar says: ‘Punish the wannabes by banning the evil weed!’

In order to raise the tension factor that little bit more, the Daily Star informs us that this year’s Big Brother contestants will not be allowed to smoke in the famous house.

The poor things, how will they cope?

Of course, all the commotion about fagging is thanks to anti-smoking campaigners who claim that the show encourages youngsters to smoke the evil weed.

Apparently, this year’s celebrity contestants, such as Pete Burns, Preston, Michael Barrymore and George Galloway, were constantly shown with a fag in their mouths.

“We’ve called on Channel 4 and Endemol to consider imposing a full ban on cigarettes this year,” said a spokeswoman for ASH (Action on Smoking and Health).

The Aussie version of the show has already banned wannabes sparking up, and with Scotland banning smoking in pubs, clubs and restaurants this week - and with Britain supposedly following suit next year - the UK show is under pressure to stub it out for good.

But who could forget the comedy genius of Nadia, the winner of the 2004 show, who simply couldn’t function without nicotine and threatened to walk from the house?

Or this year, when Dead or Alive singer Pete Burns looked like he might decapitate Chantelle if his steak lips weren’t wrapped around a fag.

Either way, if they use nicotine as a reward or a punishment this year, it’s bound to set off the primed-for-fame losers for our viewing pleasure.

Big Brother fag threat

Big Brother contestants may be forced to stub out the ciggies this summer.

Pressure from anti-smoking campaigners have caused BB bosses to consider banning smoking from the famous house.

Past contestant, including the originally-styled Pete Burns, have loved a smoke, causing campaigners to fret about the influence all this unhealthy behaviour is having on the kiddies.

A spokesperson for Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) said: "We've called on Channel 4 and Endemol to consider imposing a full ban on cigarettes this year.

"The TV show has a young fan base and clips like this encourage them to copy their idols."

"It seems remarkable that Channel 4 warn viewers about swearing or sex scenes on the show and say nothing about the dangers of smoking."

Australian Big Brother has already banned smoking.

Two years ago a contestant threatened to walk out of Big Brother because she had no cigarettes left. Ch4

The Fags Four

WITH the smoking ban just underway in Scotland, and set to begin south of the border next year, we read that the keepers of the nation’s health are wiping history clean of the dreaded weed.

The Sun reports that a new version of The Beatles Capitol Albums Volume 2 has an altered image on the cover. The Fab Four are in their places but their smokes are not.

The original album cover shot, taken in 1964, featured all but George Harrison smoking a cigarette. But now the fags are gone. And, what’s more, two of Ringo Starr’s fingers have also been vanished.
Look out! It's on fire

The message is clear: smoking has no place in modern Britain. And unless you do as ordered you are liable to have your fingers chopped off now or posthumously.

And what goes for the Sixties, goes too for Big Brother contestants. As the Star reports on its front page (“BIG BRO FAG BAN”), anti–smoking groups are calling on the show’s makers Endemol to ban the dreaded weed. Smoking has already been banned from the Australian version.

Says a spokesman for ASH (Action on Smoking And Health): “It seems remarkable that Chanel 4 warn viewers about swearing or sex scenes on the show and say nothing about the dangers of smoking.”

Quite. And what of the clear and present danger of smoking while swearing and having sex.

And while we are on it, why doesn’t the channel warn Big Brother viewers of the damage power stations – the ones that create electricity to power TVs and light the BB house - do to the environment?

For shame!

I dont really see they need to ban it I can hardly imagine kids thinking "Hey that Pete Burns looks well sexy with a fag Im gonna take up smoking" or "George Galloway looks dead sophisticated with that bloody great big cigar I too could look like that, if only I smoked".

If anything the sight of Nadia gasping for a fag is enough to put any kid off smoking for life!

They should never have given in to the fag demands in BB5.

I said earlier in a previous thread that I thought the smoking ban in the work place might have an effect on the show as during their stay in the house it is their work place. So maybe there is more than one thing tipping the balance with CH4.

In OZ I think there is a total ban on smoking on TV not just BB. There was a discussion with the remaining 4 housemates about it with Nadia.

After being used to the American meaning for 'fag' I was expecting something entirely different after reading the subject headline to this thread.

'fag' is a derogatory term for homosexual men in the states.

It's a well known word for homosexual men in this country too. I don't know that all gay people find it derogatory either, as they refer to their *fag hags*.

But I'm not an expert.

Hmm, who? Me, obviously...I remember the sulks and tantrums and desperate scouring of floors to smoke discarded fag ends but comedy genius.....nope, not remembering!

Anyhow, if they don't ban it, I hope they make sure HM's who do smoke are capable of going without it for long periods of time. I''m bored of Hm's smoking like chimneys, realising they've run out, blaming each other than demanding some from BB, arguing some more, then getting some on a plate or in a ridiculously easy task to keep them happy for a couple of days. No more!

Nasty rumour time - ALL the contestants for this year's BB are heavy smokers. They'll not find out about the ban until they are in the house, with NO ciggies available at all... Even the ones they packed in their cases will have been removed by the production team, there are NO options to buy any as part of shopping. The house rules will make it clear that smoking will not be tolorated.

Hey - don't shoot me, I am a smoker myself so can see how agonising that would be. But think of the effect it would have on HM's and the TV this will produce.

He he he...

no fags...hmm.

I wonder what Mexico BB will be like (they must have one, right?), now that all drugs are effectively legal - at least in small amounts.

Can you imagine if the rats were allowed to buy all sorts of weekend treats, hmm.

Deffo depends on the context - gay people can refer to themselves however they like - but using it as an insult would lead me to whip out my 'magic wand' and battering someone about the head with it! ::lol::
