| Post subject: | BB slammed for Glyn's Welsh warning |
MSN: Quote: Channel Four has been criticised when a Big Brother housemate had a ticking off for speaking Welsh.
Glyn spoke in his native tongue to former Miss Wales Imogen. The part-time lifeguard was told not to use Welsh as a "code" for discussing nominations. The patriotic 18-year-old, from north Wales, was called into the Diary Room on Thursday night where he was told Big Brother was always listening - even when he spoke Welsh. Big Brother said: "Housemates are free to talk in any established language of their choosing. "However, any discussion, in any language, that is deemed against the rules will result in Housemates being punished. Glyn, Big Brother is multi-lingual and is always listening. In Wales the hit reality show is broadcast on Welsh-language station S4C. Pressure group the Welsh Language Society said: "We have complained to Channel 4, Ofcom and S4C. "We are especially disappointed that S4C has chosen to broadcast this show, given that the whole point of S4C is to broadcast and promote the Welsh language. Tory AM Lisa Francis said: "I am amazed that the producers of Big Brother didn't think of employing a Welsh translator, knowing full well that two of the contestants were fluent Welsh speakers. Haha, less than 24 hours in and BB has been told off already

Oh, those Pc brigade, they're a tiresome nonsense, they go around dressed up in uniforms that are so multi-coloured they just blur, speaking esperanto, getting real men to be metrosexuals, what a true evil they are. Lets keep on at them, and not worry about racism, sexism, class intolerance, coz they're the real enemy. I think they may be worried, because two people could talk about noms, without the rest knowing, but I could be wrong |

In fairness - BB should have thought about the consequence of putting two fluent Welsh speakers. Bawn 'n ddedwydd at chyfieitha atat pawb. (I would be happy to translate for you all. )

Eh that's daft, it's always been the rule that you have to speak English in the BB house, why kick up a fuss about it now? |

| Post subject: | Big Brother and Westminster both ban Welsh |
May 20 2006 A political storm erupted yesterday when two Big Brother contestants were banned from speaking Welsh. Political Editor Tomos Livingstone considers whether politics and reality TV are more closely linked than ever THE other night I sat for a couple of hours and watched a surfer, a lapsed priest and an actress shouting at each other across a crowded room. Then I left the House of Commons and went home to watch Big Brother. There are a few similarities between the two 'houses', although neither set of inhabitants would enjoy the comparison very much. It was this similarity that George Galloway tried to exploit when he took part in the celebrity version of Big Brother a few months ago, although it's a safe rule of thumb that if you do an impression of a cat you look pretty ridiculous in either house. Another similarity is that it's against the rules to speak Welsh in either place, and that this can provoke an almighty row. The Conservatives have already called for Channel 4 bosses to apologise after contestants on the show were reprimanded for speaking Welsh. Full report in the WesternMail |

""The Conservatives have already called for Channel 4 bosses to apologise after contestants on the show were reprimanded for speaking Welsh. "" What a lot of utter nonsense. There are RULES in the house and if speaking English is one of them, they'll have to do that. Honest to goodness have you ever heard the like!!! |

FFS - what is it with these professional Taffys? Whine whine whine. The vast majority of people in England, Scotland AND WALES don't speak Welsh. Allowing the HMs to talk in Welsh without simultaneous translation would be just like allowing them to talk in code which is not permitted under BB rules. Mind you, had they been of another ethnicity and speaking Yoruba or something, I doubt whether BB would have said anything |

Hmmm, not so sure - they would have had to stop them speaking in any language not understood by the rest of the housemates - maybe you're right in that if they had come up against it with an ethnicity other than Welsh they might have had more of a controversy on their hands. |

There's been loads of times in the past when 2 people have been able to talk the same language. (I have a very vague memory of Dean and Liz BB2 being told off for speaking French) |
