This is very sad. Quote: The ex-con told pals that he bullied his mum so much she begged him to leave. He said: “I took the piss out of my mother all my childhood. “If I threw a big enough fit I’d get my own way. “My mum would say: ‘Take the f*cking lollipop – I hope you f*cking choke.’” Darnell – who was born in Ipswich but did time in the US – admitted tensions ran so high that she ditched her tearaway son. He added: “She’d schedule her life so we were around each other as least as possible. “That was my undoing.” Well, typical of the Sun to label him an ex-con, but I suppose that's the way things go. A couple of years ago, I read an interview with Pete Doherty's mum - seemed like she'd tried to be a great mother. I remember she said that she'd chosen not to have a dishwasher, because parents and kids would share some time together while they washed and dried the dishes in the sink. A small detail, but I like their idea. And yet, after all that, Pete ended up having his 'troubles'. Kids - even when they are seemingly 'grown-up' - do want time and attention from parents. It's sad that Darnell thinks his mum tried to avoid him. Clearly, life wasn't easy for mother or son. It maybe explains why Darnell seems to be stuck...not able to move on. Hope things improve for him in the future. |

Darnell is a very troubled character - a lot of what he says is so true and straight forward, and that's what we love him for, but he's his own worst enemy, he causes problems for himself a lot of the time. I think he really needs some counselling or something, or more communications skills. And yet, I really like him at the back of it all. |

We forget... or perhaps many don't realise... that Darnell is a military brat. His Mum married a US service man and that's the reason he lived firstly in Italy and later the USA. Its not an easy life for most kids, having to follow their father's postings to various bases around the country but in Darnell's case it couldn't be worse. I think its very telling that he never seems to mention anything relating to the military life... most kids would have found a welcome refuge within the community and have gotten themselves involved fully with a life on base (or attached Army accommodation). I don't know but summise that perhaps because of his looks and background he wasn't 'invited' to join in? Given his mother's story, she seems at one point to have rejected him just like the military community may have done and as did his adopted country. Of course he isn't entirely blameless himself but given his back-story its kinda understandable why he questions everything to the N'th degree. |

I didn't realise Darnell was a child of a military man. Co-incidentally, so was Pete Doherty. |
