For this week’s shopping task, for the next two days housemates are divided into Scientists (the three most intelligent housemates) and Lab Rats (everyone else). The scientists will be hypothesising how the rats will fare in a series of experiments.

[b]EXPERIMENT 1: FOOD WHEEL

A human size hamster wheel is installed in the garden. To earn their breakfast, lunch and dinner the ‘Rat Housemates’ must walk in the wheel. Walking in the wheel will reward them with cheese based foods and rewards girls with nice food and boys with nasty ‘rat feed.’ But will the Rats figure this out?

EXPERIMENT 2: EYES ON THE PRIZE
The housemates will come in turn to the Large Task Room. Wearing special eye tracking glasses, they must continually stare at a prize (sweets, time with their dog, protein shakes etc.) on a plinth in the middle of the room. Big Brother will introduce things to distract them which are;

* A 17ft snake carried by 4/5 handlers around the perimeter of the room
* A Justin Bieber lookalike singing Baby
* A Burlesque dancer performing a cheeky routine
* A Group of Superfans taking pictures and fawning over HM
Can the Rats keep their Eyes on the Prize?

EXPERIMENT 3: CARROT OR STICK
Two housemates take part in a simple game in the garden in which they have to throw a foam ball through a hole in a board. However, this is a question of ‘carrot or stick.’ Every time one housemate successfully gets the ball in the hole they will be rewarded with a cheer from a cheer leading squad and offered nice refreshment e.g. orange segments / cooling water. For the other housemates, whenever they miss a shot they will be punished with a bucket of gunge poured over their head. Who will fare better – a housemate who is rewarded or a housemate who is punished?

The winner of the Carrot or Stick experiment will get a winner’s party in the diary room to celebrate their victory. They will be given a party hat and blower, some music and some snacks to enjoy. However, Experiment 4 is about to take place….

EXPERIMENT 4: CONFORMITY
While the winner of Carrot or Stick is in the diary room, Big Brother will give the rest of the Rat Housemates an earpiece to wear but must keep it secret. When the winning Rat Housemate returns from in the diary Room, they are all called into the Large Task Room. Sitting on chairs, they all face a swirling hypnotic spiral and listen to a soothing voice of a hypnotist. Big Brother will tell the earpiece housemate to pretend that they have been hypnotised. Then the Scientists (who are in another room) will contact each housemate via the earpiece and tell them different instructions for acting hypnotised e.g. act like Benedict in one of his movies. The test will be to see if the non-earpieced goes along with the rest of the group or refuses to follow the crowd?

After the test, Big Brother may continue to have some fun at the housemate’s expense by continuing to earpiece secret instructions.

SLEEP LEARNING

In preparation for tomorrow’s Impossible Maze, one Rat housemate will spend the night in the Large Task Room. While they are asleep Big Brother will play in soothing, relaxing music with recorded dialogue over the top that says things like “You are a smart intelligent rat,” “You are a successful rat” etc. Will a night of Sleep Learning give the Rat a boost of confidence to win the next task?

For this week’s shopping task, Housemates were divided into Scientists and Lab Rats. The Housemates chose Benedict, Lydia and Luke A as the most intelligent and therefore they have become the scientists. Their fellow housemates have become Lab Rats. To pass this task the scientists must hypothesise how the rats will fare in a series of experiments.

EXPERIMENT 1: FOOD WHEEL – CORRECT

The rats were told they must run in the wheel to earn food – when the girls were in the wheel they would receive nice food and when the boys were in the wheel they would receive bad food.

The Scientists were asked to predict whether the rats would work out this pattern. They predicted that the rats would not work this out. As the rats did not work out the pattern, they successfully hypothesised the outcome of the experiment.

EXPERIMENT 2: EYES ON THE PRIZE – 3 OUT OF 4 CORRECT

One at a time, four lab rats were called into the Large Task Room. Wearing special eye tracking glasses they had to continually stare at a prize on a plinth in front of them. The results of the experiment were:

Ashleigh stared at the picture of her dog to win time with her pet, whilst a Justin Bieber lookalike tried to distract her. The scientists predicted she would take her eyes off of the prize. Ashleigh did not take her eyes off of the prize and subsequently won time with her dog. The Scientist’s prediction was therefore incorrect.

Shievonne successfully stared at takeaway cartons to win a takeaway for fellow housemates while a 17ft python was paraded around the room. The scientists predicted that she would not take her eyes off of the prize and were correct.

Scott stared at party balloons and streamers in an attempt to win a private party, while Super Fans tried to distract him by screaming and taking pictures. The scientists predicted that he would not take his eyes off of the prize and were he did not. The scientists were correct in their prediction. Scott won a private party in the Diary Room.

 Luke S stared at protein powder and weights as sexy burlesque dancer Banbury Cross performed a striptease in the room. The scientists predicted that he would not take his eyes off of the prize and were correct. Luke S won dumbbells and protein powder.

EXPERIMENT 3: CONFORMITY - CORRECT

While Scott enjoyed his private party in the Diary Room, the rest of the lab rats were issued secret ear pieces to wear by Big Brother. They were told that they would attend a fake hypnotism session in the large task room and that they had to pretend that they were hypnotised. Scott was the only Housemate not wearing an earpiece and did not know that his fellow housemates were pretending to be hypnotised.

The scientists were asked if Scott, despite not really being hypnotised, would go along with the rest of the group and act as if he was really hypnotised. The scientists predicted that he would follow the group and pretend to be a sheep. They were correct. Scott did conform and pretended that he was a sheep.

SLEEP LEARNING

In preparation for tomorrow’s ‘ impossible maze’ task, the scientists were called to the Diary Room and asked to select one lab rat who they thought needed to put more effort into tasks. Big Brother told them that the housemate they chose would have to sleep alone in the large task room while confidence-boosting subliminal messages are played in.

The scientists selected Caroline to take part in the sleep learning exercise. She will spend tonight inside the Large Task Room listening to subliminal messages. Tomorrow she will face an experiment to see whether it has worked. Will a night of sleep Learning give the Rat a boost of confidence to win the next task?

Day 16 had it all: tasks, tears, a birthday and the biggest curveball to be delivered this series.

The Lab Rats task continued with the Impossible Maze, which saw sleep-programmed Caroline and non-sleep-programmed Becky attempting to find the cheese in an impossible maze. Only the words, "I camembert it" could free them. We give humble thanks to the God of Puns. The final task in this two-day blitz was a dark investigation into the battle between obedience and compassion that takes place in the human mind. The Cruelty Task saw, for the first time, the lab rats becoming the scientists.

The housemates found out whether they had passed the task (SPOILER here - Facebook) but there was no time to dwell on their fortunes because Big Brother called them to the sofas to announce that nomination chat is no longer allowed. You heard it. The subject that launched a thousand scheming sessions is no longer open to the housemates. Violation will lead to serious penalties. Benedict and Lauren found the timing of this annoucement insenstive but you guys must be pleased. Our poll revealed that 88 percent of you are against housemates discussing nominations. Democracy wins!

Birthday girl Lydia, who'd been hoping all day for some celebratory action, exploded in grief as the day wore on without a freakin' party. But Big Brother hadn't forgotten her. There was an ace up a sleeve that may or may not have been one Andy Scott Lee.

In this spirited atmosphere of Lydia's party, Adam saw fit to propose to Shievonne. The normally collected matriach was thrown into a tailspin and claimed to feel: "shock, confusion, awkwardness, like...cringe, sadness, vulnerability and sensitivity." Well done, Ads.

And that was pretty much that for Day 16, apart from the party hi jinx, of course. If there's one thing we love about housemates, it's their dedication to party hi jinx.
