If you are thinking of going on to do a degree or have kids that are thinking of going on to degrees and live in England, I would be very careful especially if you are from a low income family!

My friends and I will owe the student loans company; £10,000 - £15,000 which I think is not fair. Especially as the choice of career I have chosen to do is one of caring for animals and the environment, where I won't be very well paid! But I am not doing the job for the money but because I am interested in animals and if more people thought like me then these under paid jobs would not be filled even though there is a need for them. Unfortunately at the moment I can see more people only going to do certain degrees (ie business, accountant, IT), not because of the interest of the subject but because it may get them a highly paid job which will enable them to quickly pay off high debt incurred.

Those students whom come after me could even be paying more. I understand that education costs but I don' t think if you are on little money you should pay so much money or if you are going to do a job where you wont be as highly paid as someone who is going to be an accountant or work in business management.

At the moment those that don't go in to university and decided to be plumber or be an electrician etc will in fact earn a lot more money than myself and won't be paying back any loans.

I was wondering about those whom have obtained degrees from a generation when they didn’t have loans to pay back, would they still consider going in to university and for those considering going to university at the moment are they now concerned about the high debts that might be obtained.

I was gonna go to university but got stuck in traffic on enrollment day so turned round and went straight back to work where id been working over the summer (in the purchasing dept of a company that make portable buildings) I then wrote to all the local computer companies and got a job working for osbournes as an engineer... Unfortunately they went bust the week before I was due to start!! LOL

I then got an interview for a trainee engineer with a local company and worked there for 2 years until I got bored, I then worked for a slightly bigger company doing the same thing, I was there 2 weeks and got promoted to head of workshop! I worked there for a while then got ill and had to leave..my boss begged me to come back from my hospital bedside which was quite funny (not at the time)

I then started this place up and that was 5 years ago!!!

I never looked back as out of all my mates I had the best car, flat etc cos most of them were living at home stuck with HUGE debts!

michelle if you are looking for a job which involves looking after animals i am sure you could pick up a low paid job in that field quiet easily. maybe at an animal shelter or something , wouldnt expect u need to go to uni to get a job like that. correct me if i am wrong.

Well unfortunately the work I want to do is that you need a degree, it does depend what you want to do, I want to help more with wildlife and you need to know a lot about the behaviour of the animals and countryside, the animals habitat etc. Everyone naturally is concerned with Africa's wildlife but many aren't interested in British wildlife which is what I want to help to conserve. I am not moaning about the loans but I am concerned that with high debts incurred because of studying there maybe a lot jobs which need degree like working for a trust may in fact not be filled because of the scare of loans.

The other thing to consider now with many getting degrees, having a degree may not necessarily get you the job you want and is not considered such a high qualification, many are going to have stay on and do masters or Phd's.

But I wish I had the interest of Obo. You did the right the thing. I bet you are glad you got stuck in traffic that day! I would advise many not to go in to Univerisity unless you have a vocation for a certain career and realise the debts you are going to be in!

i think a degree is a really good thing to have , but with regards to say the IT industry , your experience counts a LOT more than any pieces of paper! Not sure about other work though. Maybe you could try be an international playboy like me , just living it up every day? Its a good job , if you can get into it .....

I started work for a company, in the stores - general labour. Moved up to an admin position, still in stores area, when (early 80's) they start to install a computer system. No PC's then, just terminals from a mainframe. Managed to get a telling off for hacking the system (!) and playing games on it, round about same time as ZX81 came out. I'd bought one and was applying the logic to the mainframe at system level - which messed up a big backup it seems...
Next day, big computer boss came to see me. Wanted to know what I'd done to break into the system level, and what was I doing playing... After 10 minutes he offered me a job in computer dept., I learned BASIC programming (DEC PDP 11/34 for those interested) and spent 7 years in that department, ending up as acting system manager when he was retired (yes, I did type that correctly - political!). Moved from there to another company for 7 years, still programming, until their projects ended. Spent a year out of work, got another programming job, laid off after a year and have not worked since.
But - moral of story is, I didn't have any qualifications to do programming, just picked it up as I went along. Spent 15 years doing it, just wish I'd had the foresight to leave one company earlier and join a bigger one, for more cash - a friend did and they've kept him trained up to date and he's still working.
