The following is a quote from the Times newspaper:-

"Lythgoe says it is hard to pinpoint exactly what makes some people a star and others not, but he thinks Dowling has the most potential to carve a proper career. “Stars tend to have a life-force about them which draws you to them. Brian is a people magnet and he is investing in his talent. He isn’t out opening every fête, he is taking time out.”

Perhaps in these days of instant celebrity, Dowling is among the few who realises that ambition which is not supported by talent is doomed to eat itself. And that the journey from A list to Z list can be rapid and brutal."

What are your views on this and do you think anybody else has the potential to be a star?

I tend to agree that I think Brian has the most potential. His wit is all very natural and he has the right approach.

I think it's just funny Nigel chose to make comments on BB like that after he'd slated the whole show before. Hardly surprising as he was (I think) Executive Producer for Survivor, that wasn't nearly so good. I remember him doing a rant about how people must be mad to think BB was more interesting. At the time he was talking about how Survivor had more interesting tasks, but what he'd not considered was how interesting his contestants were.

BB contestants were more worthy of watching, because most of them were more watcheable than most of the Survivor lot. I suppose that equate to a certain amount of star quality. They all had something about them to make it to the final 11.

Who has the most star quality? It's so subjective, but Brian is the most obvious answer to that, because he won and was so entertaining, but he didn't do it alone. Helen stole the show from the Hollywood A-list at The Planet of the Apes, and the best selling issue of heat is the one with her and Paul on the front. There are still a few of them that have me glued to my tv whenever I'm lucky enough to see them on it. If they get the right help and don't get driven mad by show-biz, then they could at least be successful. I think being a real star for the long-term will require good decision making as well as talent.

I think with a bit of training, Paul could be quite good also, because he was quite good on "Exclusive" and Helen always seems to positively "glow" whenever we see her, which in itself makes good viewing, because she is just nice to watch and I think she also is like a magnet, which draws people to her.

I didn't see Amma in Dream Team, so I can't comment on her.

Presenting involves a range of skills beyond star quality, so I think they would all need training, or at least benefit greatly from it. They all had some innate tv talent or they wouldn't have been selected in the first place. I know what you mean about Helen's glow on tv, she really lights up the screen which attractive to any viewer.

Like you Christine I'd love to see more of Paul and I thought his work on Exclusive was excellent for someone with so little experience. Like with Helen I can't help but focus attention on him when he's on my screen, but I fancy him, so perhaps that's different. Less biased people said he was really good on BBLB which I wasn't fortunate enough to watch.

He was really good for his week on Virgin Radio and appeared to the casual listener to be just as good as the more experienced professionals on before or after him. He was very natural taking calls from the public and succeeded in not sounding like a man with a mobile disco, which is normally what happens when celebs do guest slots. I was hoping he'd perhaps do some more work with them and I even listened to the station diligently for several weeks hoping for some news, but it seemed they'd gone back to their normal boring DJs permanently. I'd love to see Paul on tv, but working on radio is a good way of learning many of the skills without being so exposed. All the BB lot are so vulnerable to criticism of the bad days everyone in the industry goes through.

I think Brian has the potential to become a very popular TV personality.
Watching him on SM:TV on Saturday, he was much more confident, relaxed and competant that James Redmond......I thought!

I watched the very first Lorraine where Helen was on, and she seemed to get on ok, then there was a very long period when I didn't watch it at all, then I caught a show late last year, and she has come on leaps and bounds! She was much more relaxed, and happier in front of the camera!

Like you said, I'd like to see more of Paul on TV as well. I thought he was excellent on Exclusive considering he had no previous presenting experience.

It's going to be another good BB Saturday this week. Not as good as presenting, but Paul is on Night Fever again! This was on the website.

Suggs and co are taking it to the bridge and getting on up for a smooth and sexy soul special, featuring legendary soul duo Odyssey performing three of their classic tunes live, including 'Use It Up, Wear It Out' and 'Going Back to My Roots'. Also climbing on board the sing-a-longa karaoke soul train for some of the grooviest karaoke this side of soulchester include plucky Paul Clarke from Big Brother and the gorgeous Kelle Bryan from Eternal. Everybody scream!

The only housemate that has the potential to be a HUGE star (coz he is a star already), is of course the charasmatic Brian. The reaction he gets whenever he appears on SM:TV is phenominal, the studio audience just love him. Not only is he a natural tv presenter but he knocks Redmond right out of the water when it comes to shear star quality, charisma, and sex appeal (check out Heats' worlds sexiest people poll!). Redmond is suppose to be the experienced actor, well Brian is 100 times better! I can't wait to find out what the TV project Brian and Blaze have up their sleeves, but whatever it is I know he'll make a success of it.
BBC Choice 2001 News Odyssey also showed Brian doing his first stint at reporting and interviewing, he was perfect! So good infact that they want him back to do more stuff for Liquid News in the future.
All I can say is watch this space!
Good Luck Brian! (o:O

I agree with eveything you say angel brian is just a born star he just light up the screen when he appears, he is just getting better and better with everything he does he was excellent on smtv he stole the show everybody just loves him. He has got a great future in television with the right backing and with everything he has done since leaving the house i think we will be seeing alot more of him to. As with helen she has the same sparkle on screen so i think she will do well to.

Yes, I think Brian is a "natural". I've just been watching him on SMTV this morning. I thought he seemed a bit nervous though and would be better if he didn't try so hard and just be his natural self!

I have watched a few episodes of Helen on Lorraine, including the really early ones and she never ever seems to be nervous. It's like Paul said in the diary room about her, that she has a lovely outlook on life and doesn't seem to have a care in the world and just takes everything in her stride.

Well - what can I say? His singing left a bit to be desired, but at least we got to see a bit more of him this time (including his backside as he leaned over the table!) :P and he actually got to speak for a change.

Great to see the lovely Mr Clarke again. OK so he's not a great singer - but that's not the whole idea of Night Fever. It's about seeing celebrities enjoying themselves, and he certainly did that. He also seems to have a best pal in Shane Ritchie - every time the cameras went over to them they were deep in conversation. :D

Agree about the rear view, Christine - very nice! In fact, he looks OK to me from every angle!!

The more all of them have been on tv, the better they've all been. Brian's still quite nervous on smtv, but well on the way to helping me get over Ant and Dec. Have to disagree about Finn though. His experience shows in the Casualty thing, but I don't think he's being himself yet with the presenting. His humour is very understated, but brilliant. They can both take inspiration from Helen's progress over the months.

WRT Night Fever. Wow, that was an unusually good episode! Normally I just watch it for glimpses of a specific individual, but even the bits without Paul were great. I'm quite worried at the thought of Paul becoming friends with Shane Ritchie, but I suppose things could be worse. So long as he's having fun. This was probably filmed ages ago as it had the same people as a show screened in October/November time, but Paul still seemed more relaxed than the first show, and of course he got to speak! Bum shot was quite a treat too.

I have to disagree with you Christine, Brian does not come across as being in the least bit nervous, his confidence was boundless and presenting effortless on yesterdays show, and as for him trying too hard and not being his natural self, well I am sorry but that is just not true! Brian was more himself than ever this week and certainly isn't trying too hard, he was relaxed, completely at ease infront of the camera, and adding lib like a much more experienced presenter, without giving it a second thought. If anyone is unatural and trying too hard look no further than James Redmond! He lacks everything Brian has in sex appeal, charisma, star quality and general ability! Brian did so much more than Redmond in yesterdays show, I forgot just who the main presenter was suppose to be! Cat seems to have much more of a rapport with Brian than she does with James, they come across as real friends. They more than the other two, look as if they are truly having a fantastic time.
So unatural and nervous... no way!
SM:TV Live are extremely lucky to have Brian on board, the new show would not be half as good without this very important and necessary magical ingredient in the form of the absolutely gorgeous Mr. Dowling!
