Hi HC

Hope you are well!!

I have read it...was quite a while ago now. The first few chapters were quite (for want of a better word) 'horrific'. Certainly, a different read. Found it quite interesting though.

Have you read her other book Lucky. This is the true story about the author Alice Seebold, who was raped at knifepoint at the age of 18. It tells about how she and her family coped with life after her rape. It doesn't flow as well as The Lovely Bones but the rape scenes are quite horrific as I'm sure you can imagine. You can see where she got the idea for Lovely Bones from. I think she thought, now what would have happened if I had died. The title Lucky was decided on as, the Police told her that shortly before her rape, another girl was raped and killed in the same tunnel, so she should consider herself LUCKY that she was still alive.

Finally managed to get 'The Lovely Bones' from the library after two months of trying ...just started it this afternoon.

i hope you enjoy it. It's not a difficult read but quite unusual.

How strange...I finished reading this night before last. I wanted to read it as mos people on here said how good it was.
I borrowed it off my sister in law about a month ago and that's how long it took me to read it.
Sorry but it wasn't one of those books I just had to read and read until it was done. All I really wanted to know was if the guy got caught and I was just so tempted to skip to the end.
Maybe it's not my kind of thing :-?

I was a bit worried that with all the hype I would be disappointed too.
I have read about 50 pages so far and have found it a bit odd. Was a bit worried about it getting me down but so far I have felt as if it written in a sort of cloudy way..if that makes sense.

It's like you are a psychiatrist and the writer is explaining what has happen rather than actually being taken through the experience as most books do....not sure yet...have to read some more.

HD, I did find it disturbing about the guy (sorry I don't want to give too much away to CC and spoil it) and although I didn't find the book was written particularly well, the unusualness of the story appealed to me andI finished it with some hope. I'm not a strongly religious person, but the idea that there is something else out there, especially if things end so horrifically felt comforting.

I have to agree with heidi about this book ...all I wanted to do was get to the end.

I've read both this book (which I got for Christmas the year before last and it depressed me) and Lucky. Both are pretty disturbing, but it kind of makes you think.

I thought the lovely bones was a great book, it really made me cry. some bits were a bit stupid, like when her ghost possesses her friend so she can have sex with that guy, and when her rapist gets killed by an icicle...

i couldnt read Lucky, i found it really stupid to be honest. i know it's cruel, cos it's her true life story, but i found it badly written and rather clumsy and self indulgent.

I agree totally Jemzie with what you say about Lucky. I thought it was really badly written too and I ddin't like the author. I felt a bit guilty about this because of the horrendous trauma that she went through, but although I felt sorry for what happened to her, I thought she was just a pain in the ass generally.

I know this will make me sound really cruel, but some of Lucky seemed kind of made up. I don't know if it's because she didn't tell us everything, but it just made me feel like it was fiction.
