I don't think Everybody Hurts is totally depressing... isn't it saying that everyone has bad times, and not to think that you're the only one? Having said that, I used to listen to it when we had a 'scare' with our daughter who was 3 - she had to be tested for a terminal disease..thank God the tests were negative...there's another song on that REM album - Night Swimming...I never knew what it was about, but I kept listening to it during those anxious weeks waiting for the results of the tests...there was a line that went 'I'm not sure all these people understand'...

a few years ago, a 17-year old daughter of someone I knew was murdered, and a song sung by Mary Black, (I'm Irish, - you should seek her out) used to break my heart... the first lines were:

'Last night I dreamt you were back again, larger than life again, holding me tight again'...I kept thinking of how the parents were suffering, losing their beloved daughter..

and there's another song, sung by Mary Black, called 'Ellis Island' (about the place where Irish emmigrants landed in New York)... it's written by someone whose lover is going to take the boat to America, and they will never see them again..

'This is the last call, for Ellis Island, these are the last words I'm ever gonna here you say...goodbye babe'..'

I have been to too many funerals of children and young people, and any song that's been played at them will always bring tears to my eyes

but on a cheerier note.... to get your spirits up...it has to be the incomparable 'I will survive'...

I agree, 'Everybody Hurts' I think was meant to be quite uplifting, unfortunately it always got to me cos I was like 'what do you mean seek comfort in my friends?!? No-one cares '...so thats why I found it depressing!

I always thought nightswimming was an innocent song about getting jiggy with a girl at night in a pool or some other place... I think the real meaning must have gone over my head

I think you might be right about Night Swimming... there was definitely a large degree of nudity...

but the tune was just so poignant...

sometimes it's better to forget the lyrics and just think of the tune. sometimes.

ooo. this is exciting. their new single came out last week btw (went in at number 50, apparently). so you could go buy it. buy the one with the skull on the front, thats better. the one with the flame is just two songs off the album, not their idea. oh the re-release (also not their idea, but it gets them away from the crappy record label, yay) of their latest album comes out today so yeah. you might enjoy that more. its a good album.
oh you might have seen like a 5 second clip of HDIECTT, sorry, I mean, How Did It ever Come To This? if you watched TOTP Saturday

I think it's about reasons not to commit suicide. If you actually listen too the lyrics they're quite uplifting in a way.

i didnt hear anything suicidal in Everybody Hurts, doesnt he actually say "don't let yourself go, hold on"

Dont talk to me about the Corrs. I sent a letter too Andrea afte she sang "What do I do to make you love me?" and now she has a restraining order out on me.
That's what I call grattitude. *humphh*

i had to listen to them constantly when i worked in O'Briens. i think if i wrote a letter to Andrea i'd be given more than a restraining order...
