Germany's version of the Big Brother reality TV show will take a giant leap next spring with the opening of a small town mimicking The Truman Show concept.

In the Jim Carrey movie, a man called Truman is unwittingly the subject of a 24-hour TV programme that monitors his every living moment for the gratification of a worldwide audience.

In the city currently being built outside Hamburg the only difference will be that contestants will be willing participants in this next-generation leap into voyeurism.

A Permanent Big Brother

German Big Brother contestants could stay on a new version of the show until they die.

Telly chiefs are planning a permanent purpose-built TOWN in a dramatic twist to the reality show.

It mirrors disturbingly the Jim Carrey movie The Trueman Show in which he played a man unaware he was living in a TV contest.

German viewers are already watching a year-long version of the reality show, but Endemol want to make it more permanent.

It is thought the show - provisionally titled Big Brother Forever - could start as early as next year.

An Endemol spokesman said: "We cannot go into details - nothing is certain yet. But the title, which is a working title, should tell you something."

Asked if the show would go on until contestants died, she added: "That's the difficult part."

A spokeswoman for Big Brother in the UK said there were no plans for the new format in Britain.

The development comes after Channel 4 was reprimanded by media regulator Ofcom for the fifth series of the reality show.

It was criticised for not acting quickly enough to put a stop to the violence on Big Brother's infamous "fight night".
