2 pieces in the Obesevor about Janet Street-Porter this one by Rafael Behr, agrees with me about the winner of the last show.

Thank God, then, for Saturday night TV and the rebirth of family light entertainment. More specifically, thank the X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, both of which have rescued the over-30s from the scrap-heap of popular culture.

The Holy Grail of broadcasting is a programme that will hook every member of the family. But until the current season it was accepted that the idea of a convergence of the generations around the TV on a Saturday night was itself obsolete.

Choice, it was reckoned, had refined our palates so much that mass entertainment would taste bland to everyone.

This has been proved wrong by Strictly Come Dancing (slightly famous people are partnered with professionals in a knock-out ballroom dance competition) and the X-Factor (Joe and Joanne Public, trained by seasoned Svengalis, take part in a musical talent contest).

Both programmes bridge the generation gap. The X-Factor has an over-25s category, two contestants from which, amiable middle-aged pub crooner Steve and charmingly bonkers soul diva Rowetta, are favourites to win. What's more, one of the judges, Sharon Osbourne, is 50 years old... and cool.

The real test of whether or not Britain has found a new affection for seniority will, of course, be the new series of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here, (slightly famous people are judged by the public according to their ability to eat worms), which starts tonight. Last year Jenny Bond, redoutable middle-aged BBC journalist, was robbed of the crown by vacuous popstrel Kerry McFadden. This time the smart money has to be on a pro-brains backlash in support of 57-year-old broadcast veteran Janet Street-Porter.

The other comment on Janet in this weeks Observer comes from Cristina Odone.

Gone with the wind

The new series of I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here has all the ingredients of a must-see. It is a bunch of mediocre creatures (and poor innocent animals) who will be at the mercy of an explosive and potentially devastating force of nature. I mean Janet Street-Porter, of course. The first time I met her was in the Nineties, when we were on the same all-woman late-night talk show on TV. Hosted by Germaine Greer, the programme kicked off with the seminal gender-bending question, 'Do you fart in bed?' As far as I remember, Suzanne Moore admitted that, yes, she did, Caitlin Moran said the same - and then Janet took over. She held us spellbound as she described the way any man who came to her bed would have to put up with her 'unpleasant' habits, of which flatulence, we gathered, was by far the most acceptable. She held forth - frank, horrifying, unstoppable. By the time we staggered off the set, I heard one woman breathe a sigh of relief: 'Scariest woman in the world or what?' 'I don't know,' a cameraman shrugged, 'but I think I've just fallen in love with her.'

Janet is losing the plot. She is the very one who slagged off the show and called the viewers who watched the show 'brain dead' Now she is whingeing in the jungle about the treats they have been given and said "this is not why I came on the show" Paul told her she had signed up for the show, she replied, "I didn't sign up to be given this sort of treat after the hard work that has gone into getting the box and getting the question right, I want real games"
What is she talking about? she knows the set-up and the tasks and trails they have to do........stop whingeing Janet! the viewers will not take kindly to a whinger, they never do.

Elton predicts jungle ‘death match’

Pop superstar Elton John has predicted a 'death match' between his pal Janet Street-Porter and ex-royal butler Paul Burrell, claiming she doesn't like Paul or the royal family.

Talking exclusively on the first programme of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! 4 to be screened Sunday, Elton said: "Now there's fireworks. Janet and Paul Burrell. That would be quite an interesting celebrity death match."

"I don't think she likes him very much. You know that might be worth the price of admission that one.

But as long as none of the royals are going - I think that would be difficult for her to swallow. She's not a great lover of the royal family."

But Elton, who vows to be glued to this series to watch Janet, says Paul isn't the only one who needs to watch out for the wrath of Janet.

"Sophie Anderton. That could be difficult. Janet prefers men to women, I know that, as far as friends go."

"She's a very friendly kind of person, once you get to know her but I wouldn't like to be another girl on the programme. It's going to be tough."

On swapping shoes with Janet for the next two, Elton says: "Absolutely not! I like a luxury hotel and a nice hot shower in the morning thank you very much."

"I am not the bravest person with bugs or anything like that .. no way.the great out doors is definitely not for me. But it is for Janet. She'll be all right."

I shall be cheering Janet on in the trial..there's something about her I just have to admire - not sure what it is though..

She's not nearly as wonderful as Jenniebond! but there's something about her that seems warm - and I don't think it's her scarlet hair.

She was talking to Fran about last years show and both of them said how surprised they were that Kerry won. Fran said he was a friend of Kerry's but still thought Jennie Bond should have won.......Janet replied, "it was amazing"

Support increases for Janet Street Porter

Janet Street Porter's odds have been cut from 10/1 to 7/1 to win I'm A Celebrity.

Ladbrokes also think she has a better chance of surviving the first eviction - her odds on going have drifted from 8/1 to 10/1.

Ladbrokes spokesman Warren Lush said: "Punters admire her courage and no nonsense attitude. We have seen plenty of support for her and been forced to cut her odds on winning."

Joe Pasquale remains bookies favourite to win the show at 3/1, followed by Brian Harvey at 5/1 and Fran at 6/1.

Meanwhile, with Natalie Appleton looking increasing unlikely to last the course, bookmakers William Hill have announced that if the producers of the show have to replace one of the contestants, and he or she goes on to win - then all bets taken up until then will stand and Hills will pay out on the person who comes second.

Natalie is currently 7/1 favourite to win the show.

Sheila Ferguson and Paul Burrell are the bookies favourites to go first with odds of 3/1.

Janet Street Porter has triumphed in the latest bushtucker trial.

She survived a snake pit to win nine meals for her ravenous team-mates.

The journalist was chosen by the public to face the Snake Strike trial ahead of former Royal butler Paul Burrell.

And she emerged from the reptile infested pit with a haul of nine stars.

Piers shuns Celebrity
Morgan also revealed he had turned down the chance to appear on I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.
"I decided there wasn't a fee large enough to stomach Janet Street Porter in a leopard skin suit straddling my hammock with lust in her eyes," he said.mediaguardian

Well done Janet. We need to show these programme-makers that older women are well up to the challenge (remember Jenniebond! and the rats last time?).

Then maybe End'em'all will get the courage to have a woman over 40 in the BB house.

I'm just about to post on the Celebrity BB thread that Germaine Greer is being lined up for the forth-coming series of Celebrity BB. Greer said she gets approached every time and discussions are going forward. She will do it if she gets enough money, but she thinks they wont offer her enough money to do it.

POISON-tongued journalist Janet Street-Porter had a taste of her own medicine yesterday when she was bitten by snakes during her Bushtucker Trial.

Three of the reptiles bit mouthy Janet as she searched in a tank of them for stars to earn meals. But despite feeling fangs sinking into her Janet still managed to get nine meals for the celebs.

She told hosts Ant and Dec: “People say snakes are not venomous but when they bite you, it’s not very nice. They are so quick.”

Earlier she said she was determined to do well in the challenge for Brian Harvey, even though they fell out on the first day.

Janet said: “I can live on rice and beans but other people, especially Brian, can’t. I’ve got to do it for Brian.”

They even hugged when she returned and he told producers in the Bush Telegraph: “She’s lovely, she really is.”
