HALT BID ON 'CRUEL TV TRIALS' Dec 28 2004

A BID to ban bushtucker trials from reality TV show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here, has been launched by MPs.

They signed a Commons motion accusing the ITV1 show's producers of "animal abuse".

Led by former Sports minister Tony Banks, the MPs claim the trials are cruel. Some involve eating live bugs and manhandling animals.

Another sees a star buried in a coffin of rats.

Mr Banks said if ITV continues with the "inane" show, the trials should not include "tormenting, abusing or killing animals, reptiles and insects".

MPs suggest trials without animals, such as a quiz.

In the motion, which is unlikely to result in any legal changes, Mr Banks claims the "Z-list celebrities" agree to go along with anything if it will help revive their career.

Comic Joe Pasquale won last month's show, in which former royal butler Paul Burrell was made to eat kangaroo testicles.
