Germaine Greer, the outspoken feminist writer and broadcaster, was last night revealed as one of the eight contestants taking part in the latest series of Celebrity Big Brother.
Wearing a demure grey woollen ankle-length dress and peering out of her glasses like a headmistress, she spent her first moments in the house assessing her fellow housemates.

Producers hope that she will have a similar presence on the show as journalist Janet Street-Porter in the recent I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! injecting an element of quirkiness.

Dr Greer, who said she agreed to take part to raise money for her rain forest, has previously described watching Big Brother as being "as dignified as looking through the keyhole in your teenage child's bedroom door".

Analysing the phenomenon further, she said: "Reality TV is not the end of civilisation as we know it it is civilisation as we know it."

The author of The Female Eunuch is likely to create some entertaining viewing. Locked in a house 24 hours a day with the model Caprice, Bez from the pop band Happy Mondays, actress Brigitte Nielsen, the actor Jeremy Edwards, racing pundit John McCririck, Kenzie from Blazin' Squad and DJ Lisa I'Anson, is likely to test her patience. Dr Greer hates smoking, does not tolerate cigarettes being lit around her and admits that she can sometimes be "quite short" with people. "I'm supposed to be terrifying," she said of herself.

In her profile for the show, the 65-year-old confessed that she always slept in the nude and rarely wore underwear.

"It's going to be so hard for me to remember that I'm supposed to have my bits covered," she said. In that, however, she may find an ally in Ms Nielsen, who said last night she liked to walk around topless.

It is the third instalment of the Celebrity Big Brother series. They will compete for a prize fund of up to £50,000, with proceeds divided equally among their chosen charities

Looks like Germaine has grown a few more soft spots since the photo!

Have to say she is growing on me too, strangely enough, I like all of them(in a BB way of course) although the Nilesen woman's need for EVERYBODY to listen to her when she was speaking last night was call for the mute button.
