Big Brother show 'like a fascist prison': Greer

Celebrity Big Brother quitter Germaine Greer likened the show to a fascist prison and suggested it might be responsible for encouraging playground bullying, in a scathing attack after her shock departure.

The feminist icon said she had been prepared for the way Big Brother brought about a “state of abjection” in the housemates, but not for the taunting of racing pundit John McCririck nor the “complete irresponsibility” of bringing in Brigitte Nielsen’s former mother-in-law, Jackie Stallone.

Greer, who left the house yesterday after just five days, also laid into her fellow housemates, saying DJ Lisa I’Anson was no Greta Garbo. Nielsen behaved like “a cat with an electrode up its arse” and model Caprice was “sweet, innocent and badly educated”.

Greer said it was “good” that she sounded angry with the Channel Four programme’s makers but said she was mainly feeling embarrassment, annoyance with herself and “an extent of humiliation”.

“What I wasn’t prepared for was the taunting of John,” Greer told a press conference at the Elstree film and TV studios.

“Because I am a teacher, I deal with bullying in schools. I would quite like to have a look at the epidemiology of bullying to see if the rise and rise of Big Brother and the rise and rise of bullying have anything to do with each other.”

Greer said she had left the show partly because of the way McCririck was taunted when he was denied a drink of diet cola when all the other housemates were offered one.

She continued: “What really threw me was the complete irresponsibility of introducing Brigitte’s first mother-in-law.”

Greer said Nielsen had panicked when Sylvester Stallone’s mother, Jackie, arrived because she could see that, if she reacted in the wrong way, the media would use it against her and it might harm her access to her children.

She said she had gone into the house, much to the surprise of those around her, because she wanted to raise money for her 125 acres of rainforest in Australia.

Talking about the techniques used by Big Brother, she said the bedroom was freezing cold and blinds were drawn to make it appear that it was night time, as in “fascist prisons”.

Greer’s chosen charity, Buglife, will still get its proportion of money earned through the voting phonelines.

CELEBRITY BB: BULLY BOYS

GERMAINE Greer sensationally quit Big Brother yesterday - then accused bosses of encouraging the housemates to "bully" John McCririck.

The feminine icon also blasted the "complete irresponsibility" of forcing Brigitte Nielsen to live with her former mother-in-law Jackie Stallone.

Germaine, 65, said she had only gone in to raise money for rainforests but admitted she had "f**ked up big time". After walking out she said: "I felt embarrassment, annoyance with myself and humiliation."

Before leaving, Germaine refused to tell the others what was on her mind.

But she let rip later over the decision to refuse McCririck his favourite drink of Diet Coke, while giving it to the others.

She said: "I wasn't prepared for the taunting of John. Because I'm a teacher I deal with bullying in schools.

"Giving the housemates Diet Coke was demonstrating the role of taunting in the playground.

"There are so many children's lives which have been ruined by taunting in the playground." She also condemned the decision to introduce Jackie Stallone. She said: "At first Brigitte was in shock and was trying to figure it out.

"Now she finds she has to confront a woman who made her life hell."

If she'd had the chance, said Germaine, she would have nominated Brigitte for eviction to help her get away from Jackie, and McCririck because "he is a f**king pain in the arse".

Germaine's decision to go stole Brigitte's thunder.

Hours after Jackie's arrival, Brigitte, 41, told the others: "I'm leaving. There's nothing you can do to help." In a 2.30am chat she said: "Big Mama is stepping out of the picture thanks to Big Bro because he chose to have Jackie in here."

and McCririck, that's IT! I thought it was McCricken as I was getting a tad confused so I kind of named John 'John McCricken Chicken' ::lol::

CAROLE Caplin says Celebrity Big Brother used her name ruthlessly to promote the show by "putting it around the media" that she "jumped" at the chance to become a housemate. What, I wonder, was more distressing for the fragrant Carole: her name being bandied about in this way or the public believing her capable of using a TV show to exploit her never understated talents in such a manner?

Perish the thought.

I CAN see why some might consider racing pundit John McCririck a ghastly trick played on mankind.

It's as if Bernard Manning's body has been fused with Alan Clark's arrogance and finished off with a mouth as foul as Gordon Ramsay's.

But I'd hazard a guess that McCririck will emerge an unlikely hero in Celebrity Big Brother because, in a sea of blandness, he's got the bottle to stand up for his principles.

His silent protest that Big Brother should adhere to the agreement to provide him with fizzy Diet Coke will have more resonance with the public than all the meaningless tittle-tattle from his housemates.

Am I the only one who wonders how much money this cruel little joke is making for programme makers Endemol? Check out the number of Diet Coke ads tonight.

PS. Some horses McCririck ought to back next week:

Diet Coke out of Red Rum and Looks Like Trouble.

Fridge Raider out of Seabiscuit and Corbiere.

Loopy Lad out of Big Brother and Flying Tantrum.

exactly Cameron, it is PATHETIC. He is on Big Brother is one of the rules not 'Big Brother can alter the rules at anytime' or something like that? therefore they were not entitled to all the shopping budget. I have a feeling he had planned a stunt like this before he went in to seek attention.

I always find it amusing when housemates think they can get one over on Big Brother. There is NOT A HOPE!

But there is, as they have been given lots of food, John has his diet coke, and they never passed the task, they were allowed to sleep late, and BB didn't hassle them,

But if you believe John, then the diet coke etc was part of his contract and had nothing to do with the shopping budget :-?
