Robbie wins Brits best song prize

Robbie Williams has now win 15 Brit Awards
Robbie Williams' track Angels has won the prize for the best British song of the past 25 years at the Brit Awards.

Williams performed the track as a duet with Joss Stone at the event, hosted by Chris Evans.

Teenage singer Stone walked away with the awards for best female artist and best urban act.

US act Scissor Sisters led the winners so far with three prizes, while Franz Ferdinand and Keane went home with two awards each.

The US band - who opened the show with Take Your Mama - won the best international act and newcomer awards, as well as best international album.

Franz Ferdinand, who were shortlisted in five categories, won best rock act and best British group, an award they dedicated to late DJ John Peel.

But they missed out on best British live act, which went to Muse. Keane won best British album and breakthrough act. Will Young won the best single prize for Your Game.

McFly won the best pop act prize, and Gwen Stefani picked up the best international female artist award. Eminem won the male prize.

Best British male artist winner Mike Skinner - aka The Streets - does not usually attend award ceremonies, but the Birmingham hip-hop artist performed his hit Dry Your Eyes at the ceremony.

However, he did not collect his prize. A bandmate informed the crowd Skinner was "in the toilet".

After beating Amy Winehouse, Jamelia, Natasha Bedingfield and PJ Harvey to the best British female prize, Joss Stone said: "I don't know what to say. I don't like doing this at all. I'd like to thank my family for being really supportive and everybody that made my record with me."

"I don't even know what to do right now. Thank you all you guys for voting for me, I feel sick right now."

Viewers of digital music TV channel MTV Base voted Stone the winner in the best urban act category.

Little Britain comedy duo Matt Lucas and David Walliams presented the best song prize to Robbie Williams dressed as his former Take That colleagues Gary Barlow and Howard Donald, leading him to quip he was "always the talented man of the band".

Scissor Sisters won three awards at the ceremony
Williams' track beat songs by Will Young, Queen, Kate Bush and Joy Division in a vote by BBC Radio 2 listeners.

It is his 15th Brit award, having already received 10 solo awards and four with Take That. He told the audience: "I'm just amazed that my career keeps going."

Collecting the best rock act prize, Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos said: "We've had a smashing time and we think it's time for someone else to have a go."

The Scottish four-piece - who played Take Me Out - face stiff competition in the best British group category from Muse, Snow Patrol, Keane and Kasabian.

Keane frontman Tom Chaplin thanked fans for enduring "rubbish gigs" after they won the British breakthrough act prize.

Daniel and Natasha Bedingfield

He added: "A lot of people don't think it's cool that we've had the guts to be ourselves but it's a vital part of who we are as a band and receiving this is recognition of that."

Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears thanked his record label "for taking a gamble on us" and the British people "for embracing us and giving us the best year of our lives".

Frontwoman Ana Matronic added: "I have Cornish, Welsh and Irish heritage and it's amazing to be embraced by a place that I owe my ginger hair to."

Chart-topping siblings

Natasha Bedingfield - in the running for best British female and best pop act - performed with her brother Daniel for the first time at Wednesday's event.

Gwen Stefani won the best international female prize
The chart-topping siblings duetted on the Chaka Khan hit Ain't Nobody.

Meanwhile, Joss Stone performed Right To Be Wrong backed by a gospel choir, while Lemar and Jamelia performed the Robert Palmer track Addicted To Love.

Bob Geldof won a prize for his outstanding contribution to music.

The ceremony will be televised on ITV1 on Thursday. BBC

Williams attacks Sun over Doherty claim

Robbie Williams denies claims that he wanted Pete Doherty (top) banned from the Brits. Photographs: Guardian/Dan Chung and AP

Lawyers acting for Robbie Williams have demanded an apology from the Sun over what he claims is a "grossly offensive and untrue" story that he threatened to pull out of tonight's Brit music awards ceremony unless troubled rocker Pete Doherty was banned from attending.

Williams' lawyers have written to the newspaper over a story in yesterday's Bizarre showbusiness gossip column headlined: "Robbie - Ban Pete or I Quit. Brits bosses sweat after star's bombshell threat".

The story alleged that Williams had refused to perform at the Brits unless Doherty - released from Pentonville prison last night - was removed from the Brits guest list and banned from attending.

It claimed that Williams, whose hit Angels has been nominated for best song at the awards, fears the Babyshambles frontman, who is struggling with drug addiction, would upstage him.

The column alleged that Williams' conduct was hypocritical given his own battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

A statement from Williams' lawyers, Sheridans, said the story's claims were "grossly offensive and defamatory allegations against Robbie Williams and are completely untrue".

The statement continued: "Our client has not sought to have Pete Doherty removed from the guest list or banned from attending the Brit awards. He has made no threat not to appear or perform.

"He has not sought to impose any conditions concerning Pete Doherty. Our client is not unsympathetic in his attitude to any problems Pete Doherty has with drug or alcohol addiction."

Sherdians said that the Sun published the "damaging and offensive article" without checking whether it was true with Williams or his management.

The law firm said it had written to the Sun asking it to explain its conduct and requesting the publication of "an immediate apology and retraction". It has received an acknowledgement of the letter and confirmation that the matter is being looked in to.

The Sun did not return MediaGuardian.co.uk's calls by the time of publication.

Last week lawyers acting for film star Jude Law wrote to the News of the World complaining about allegations concerning his private life that were published in the paper.

Celebrities have gained confidence in taking legal action against newspapers due to a recent run of successful lawsuits.

Model Naomi Campbell won a long-running legal battle with the Mirror after a 2004 House of Lords ruling that the newspaper had breached her privacy by revealing the details of her treatment for drug addiction.

That followed the successful case brought by Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas against Hello! magazine, after it published unauthorised photographs of their wedding, despite an exclusive deal with rival celebrity title OK!.guardian

I thought the Brits was fantastic this year - so much talent has emerged in the last few years. One surprise though, how on earth did Will Young manage a nomination in the Brit25 Best Song category? Where was Wonderwall, Going Underground, Atomic...?

It must be very difficult to pick a tune from 25 years...from that list Joy Division stuck out by a country mile to me and should have won.

Will Young has grown on me a little but I still can't forgive him for slaughtering the Doors a couple of years back.

Will actually did a cover of Jose Feliciano's version of the song, which he released in 1968 - and it's very close to Jose's version, so it could be said that Jose is guilty, not Will!! :D

;)
