Not just a world record but an honour from the Queen, Ellen MacArthur arrived back in Falmouth to a rapturous welcome, and before she even reached land, in an e-mail to the boat, the news came that she had been made a Dame.

The 28-year-old yachtswoman stormed into the record books as the fastest person to sail solo, non stop, around the world.

She said there were times when she didn't think she'd make it, and when home seemed a very long way away.

But just over 71 days since she set out, thousands of people lined Falmouth harbour to welcome her onto dry land.

She had spent 71 days alone but Ellen MacArthur had company as she made her way home.

She said the one thing she had missed out at sea was having people around her, now everyone wanted to follow in her wake, and the solo sailor led a flotilla.

She had led from the beginning of the challenge, always ahead of the clock, always in sight of the record.

The sea was as busy as a shipping lane with boats weaving in and out so they could ride with her on the final leg.

Thousands came out to cheer her home, lining Falmouth's coast to welcome her back to the place she had left in November.

All captivated by the tiny sailor and her enormous achievement, still working on her boat to the end, knowing she was just less than a mile from shore.

As the boat docked the sheer relief was obvious, she had battled through strong winds, slow winds, faulty equipment and exhaustion.

t had taken her 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds to break the record.

She said: "It is so fantastic to be here at the finish of this trip, having been around the world, having got home, and above all being able to share it because the record means nothing if you cannot share it, and I'm so proud of the team for having out this project together."

Reunited with her parents, Ken and Avril MacArthur were relieved their circumnavigating daughter was finally leaving her boat. They said they had worried for 70 days.

The immediate worry for Ellen was opening the champagne, the lack of sleep sometimes only 15 minutes a night, showed as she grappled with the bottle, she only just had enough strength to pop the cork.

At least it was now the spray of champagne rather than the sea.

She said: "I had a clock on board and for 71 days I watched it tick away, and in the good moments and the bad moments the one thing that never changed was the clock because it was ticking the entire time.

"So to see the clock, with the second hand not moving, is unbelievable and I am so relieved."

It was just before 10.30pm last night when Ellen crossed the finish line at Ushant off the French coast, knocking more than a day off the solo, non-stop round-the-world record.

Later as she enjoyed her first real sleep, the boats in Falmouth were starting out early to greet her.

All shapes and sizes taking to the water, the lookout points packed, all looking for Ellen.

She sailed out of Falmouth as just Ellen, now she is Dame Ellen, an honour to add to her record, but she is not packing away her sails yet.

She said: "It is not the end. There is a lot more records out there."

Quote:
THE Queen and Tony Blair were at the centre of a bizarre riddle over yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur's Damehood last night.

It began on Monday when the sailor received an email from her project manager telling her about the honour.

He claimed Tony Blair wanted to award her only a CBE, but the Queen had overruled him and demanded that Ellen be made a Dame.

Downing Street and Buckingham Palace denied the allegation, which was made in an ITV documentary screened last night.

But Ellen's project manager Mark Turner confirmed that, at first, No10 had wanted to give her a CBE. Within two-and-a-half hours, however, they had changed their mind and upgraded her honour.

Mr Turner was contacted by Downing Street at 5.30pm on Monday, five hours before Ellen broke the solo round-the-world sailing record.

He said: "They asked if I could pass the message on to Ellen to ask whether she was willing to accept a CBE. It was quite difficult for me to get hold of her on the boat.

"I sent a message on and got a message back half-an-hour later saying she would be delighted to accept that."

But at about 8pm, the Prime Minister's office contacted Mr Turner a second time to tell him Ellen was now being offered a Damehood.

He said: "I called and spoke to her and she was delighted to accept that.

"She joked at the time, 'I wonder who changed their mind'.

"It was, undoubtedly, a slightly amusing moment."

In the documentary, Ellen was seen reading out an email from Mr Turner.

She said it told her that Tony Blair originally just wanted to make her a CBE, but the Queen stepped in, saying: "Don't be silly, only a Dame will do."

A Downing Street source said: "The Prime Minister recommended a Damehood. There is no overruling."

A Buckingham Palace source said: "Both the Queen and Mr Blair were in full agreement that a Damehood was appropriate and fully deserved."

LONDON (AFP) - In probably the most unusual tribute since she completed her record breaking round-the-world yacht trip, British sailor Ellen MacArthur has had a baby pygmy hippo named after her, zoo officials said.

Ellen the pygmy hippo was named because she loves water, a marked contrast to most members of her endangered species which, unlike the common hippo, generally prefer dry land.

"Ellen loves the water, just like her namesake, and spends a lot of time paddling about in the pool," said Kathleen Standen, a senior keeper at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland.

The baby hippopotamus was born on 22 January, the fourth offspring of 11-year-old Leah.

The newly-honoured Dame Ellen, 28, sailed into fame last week when she broke the record for the fastest solo yacht circumnavigation of the globe, completed in 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds.

what the feck is this adulation of ellen feckin macarthur?

all she is is a self publising hairy lesbo on a boat

its not as if she's done anything important, so what if she went for a sail

1. she had a whole support team looking after her, its not like the old days when someone would go exploring and if they stuffed up they were dead, now all they do is get out the satelite phone and ring up a rescue at the tax payers expence

2. she never sailed around the world. if you think about going roud the world you naturally assume you set off in one direction and return the other way having gone AROUND the world, not ellen macarthur, her round the world voyage entailed sailing down the atlantic, going around antartica, and sailing back up the atlantic. WHAT A FECKIN CON

p*ss off ellen macarthur you nonentity

Good on her! but not B&Q

Dear Sir/Madam

My congratulations to you on getting a yacht to leave
the UK on 28th November 2004, sail 27,354 miles around
the world and arrive back 72 days later.

Could you please let me know when the kitchen I
ordered 96 days ago will be arriving from your
warehouse 13 miles away?

Yours Sincerely

Westy ;)
