On the first "result" show of its new season Wednesday, "American Idol" cut four of its 24 finalists – the lowest vote-getters from Monday's and Tuesday's sing-offs.
Long Island's standard-bearer, Joe Murena, 26, of Smithtown, survived the round and will get to sing again next week. Judd Harris, 27, one of three New York City residents to make the final 24, did not. The judges said his choice of songs hurt him. Simon Cowell actually said he felt sorry for Harris, an actor.
Also sent home were Melinda Lira, 19, from Hanford, Calif.; Jared Yates, 18, from Danville, Ill.; and Sarah Mather, 22, from Wilmington, N.C.
Host Ryan Seacrest said more than 40 million votes had been cast this week.
