Two young Manchester United players are facing jail after being convicted of a high-speed road race that caused a crash and left two people injured.

Mads Timm, 20, was found guilty of taking part in a road chase with fellow Old Trafford starlet Callum Flanagan, 19.

A jury at Minshull Street Crown Court took less than an hour to convict Timm of dangerous driving.

Flanagan - who has since been released by Manchester United - had earlier pleaded guilty to the same charge.

The court heard the pair had sped along a 40mph road in Partington after finishing a training session at around 1pm on January 14 last year.

They had been racing along roads in convoy at high speed when the crash happened.

Timm, driving a silver Mitsubishi Evolution, led the chase and drove around a right hand bend.

Flanagan followed in his black Honda Civic but lost control of the car and collided into an oncoming vehicle.

Driver Angela Bourne suffered heel and knee injuries and a passenger in Flanagan's car, team mate Phil Marsh, 17, had to be cut from the wreckage.

Witnesses reported seeing the players exchanging taunts and gesticulating to one another before the crash.

Both men were allowed bail and will return to court on March 3 for sentencing.

The maximum sentence for dangerous driving is two years' imprisonment.

A Manchester United player has been jailed for his part in a high-speed road race in which two people were hurt near the club's training ground.
Mads Timm, 20, was convicted of dangerous driving along with former United player Callum Flanagan, 19, at Manchester Crown Court last month.

The pair were given respective 12 and eight month sentences in a young offenders' institution.
