Quote:
THE time of the Grand National was changed yesterday — to avoid a clash with the Royal Wedding.

The start of the 166-year-old race was put back 25 minutes so coverage of its build-up would not overlap with Charles and Camilla.

The steeplechase, which always starts at 3.45pm, will not now get under way until 4.10pm.

It means the horse-mad Queen can watch the Aintree race, where Clan Royal will be one of the favourites.

But it caused a nightmare for the BBC and confused millions of punters.

Charles will wed Camilla at 12.30pm in Windsor Guildhall with a blessing in the Castle at 2.30pm.

Coverage begins on BBC1 at noon. Grandstand starts on BBC2 at 1pm, switching to BBC1 at 3.30pm.

Aintree’s boss Charles Barnett said the switch had followed “a great deal of discussion”.

Bookies Ladbrokes called it “unprecedented”.

LIVERPOOL (Reuters) - A forecast cold blast ahead of Saturday's Aintree Grand National has prompted bookmakers Coral to brace themselves for bets on three big outsiders.

The National traditionally attracts thousands of once-a-year punters and Arctic Copper (80-1), Glenelly Gale (80-1) and Polar Red (100-1) could potentially cost bookmakers dear.

Coral spokesman Simon Clare said on Thursday: "People pick Grand National horses for all sorts of reasons and given the British obsession with the weather we are prepared for a rush of money for the three horses with weather-related names."

Sleet and icy winds are forecast over the next couple of days. Coral are offering 20-1 against snow falling during the big race.

The start of Saturday's National has been put back 25 minutes to accommodate TV coverage of the wedding of Prince Charles to Camilla Parker Bowles.

In royal mode, Irish bookmakers Paddy Power are offering 28-1 against Clan Royal and Royal Auclair both finishing in the first five.

History would be made if Carrie Ford succeeds on 10-1 chance Forest Gunner and becomes the first woman to capture the National since its inception in 1839.

Bookmakers William Hill make the duo slight odds on at 5-6 to complete the 30-fence, 4 ½ mile (7.2 km) marathon.

"My Grandaughter was yelling 'Get up' at one poor nag that had fallen over. Her Mummy had put a fiver on it for her and she recognised the 'pretty colours'

I was told off for describing one of the nags as a "Bl**dy Camel" and then had to explain that Grandpa was only joking
