World of television awaits Baftas

Little Britain is nominated in two categories
BBC comedy Little Britain and light entertainment hit Strictly Come Dancing are among the programmes in contention at the Bafta TV awards on Sunday.

The BBC Three show is nominated for best comedy series, while Matt Lucas and David Walliams are shortlisted for best comedy performance.

The cast of Coronation Street will be hoping to win best continuing drama at the ceremony in London.

Channel 4 drama Shameless is in the running for two prizes.

'In with a chance'

I'm A Celebrity hosts Ant and Dec are also nominated for best entertainment performance, and face opposition from Paul O'Grady and Paul Merton for his long-running role on Have I Got News For You?

Nighty Night - another comedy that began life on BBC3 - has been shortlisted twice, for best sitcom and comedy performance for its star and creator, Julia Davis.

The ITV drama Dirty Filthy Love, about a man's struggle with obsessive compulsive order, also gains a best actor nomination for Michael Sheen.

Oscar-nominated actress Brenda Blethyn could win a first Bafta TV award for her role in ITV drama Belonging.

"Obviously I'm in with a chance if I'm nominated," said the star, who is attending the awards ceremony at the Theatre Royal.

Best factual

"But I haven't got any expectation of winning. Also, I haven't seen any of the other programmes, but I hear people talking about them, about how wonderful they were," added Blethyn.

Michael Palin's Himalaya series has been nominated for best factual series - his 1990 programme Around The World In 80 Days won three Bafta TV awards.

Television news and current affairs is also recognised at the awards, with coverage of the tsunami disaster and the Madrid bombings among the nominations.

This year's awards ceremony, hosted by Graham Norton, will be screened on BBC One at 2000 BST. bbc

Little Britain triumphed at the British Academy Television Awards winning yet more awards for the comedy take on British life.

The show won both its nominations for Comedy Performance and Comedy Series.

Matt Lucas and David Walliams, who created and star in the show as an eclectic mix of British characters beat Rory Bremner, Julia Davis and Tamsin Greig for the Comedy Performance title.

The show itself, which began life as a radio pilot before becoming a radio show and then a BBC Three television series, won Comedy Series over the Catherine Tate show, Harry Hill's TV Burp and The Mark Steel Lectures.

Rhys Ifans was named best actor for the Channel 4 drama Not Only But Always - his portrayal of comic legend Peter Cooke.

Romanian actress Anamaria Marinca won best actress for her TV debut in Sex Traffic, the Channel 4 drama about Eastern Europeans being sold into prostitution in London.

Paul O'Grady won the award for entertainment performance for his new chat show The Paul O'Grady Show beating Paul Merton for Have I Got News For You, Stephen Fry for QI and Ant and Dec for I'm a Celebrity....Get Me Out of Here.

Shameless, the Channel 4 drama set in a sink Manchester estate, won one of its two nominations for Drama Series.

Shameless creator Abbott added: "I'm more proud of this than any other I have received before. The Bafta for Shameless is especially good as it was a difficult thing to sell to any network.

"I really feel like we've pulled off everything we said we'd do when we first started. It's the most satisfying and fulfilling programme that I've ever done, and it's been fantastic working with all these great actors who have been growing up in leaps and bounds. Some of them were 10 or 12 years old when they first came on (to the show).
